If anyone has experience after a small bowel obstruction operation on how to prevent another obstruction, and what foods one should avoid please let me know

Were you given any diet advice by your doctor? I've had multiple bowel obstructions and 3 surgeries to resolve them. The number one diet to follow is called low residue. You can Google a full list of foods to eat and foods to avoid but the gist of it is to only eat things that are easy to digest such as white breads and pasta, white meat (chicken/turkey/eggs) and fully cooked soft veggies. Avoid anything that's difficult to digest such as red meat, raw fruits and veggies, especially with seeds or skins, no nuts, whole grains, etc. This is just off the top of my head but by following this diet I've been able to avoid being hospitalized since 2013, even though I currently have multiple strictures and dilated loops in my small intestines. Prayers for success in staying away from obstructions! 🙏

Thank you so much. I am very grateful for your comments. I will do anything to avoid either the NG tube or another operation, I was given a low fibre diet when I left the hospital (3 months ago now) but told I could eat a normal diet after a month or so, I looked up the low residue diet. It all sounds good except if I don't have any fibre then I have the problem of constipation which is awful. So I do eat some fibre but not too much. I cannot let constipation affect me (again!). I will definitely take note of your food suggestions. I am so glad you have avoided any operation since 2013. That is really great. I hope we can keep in touch. Thanks again

In 2019 I had two small bowel obstruction surgeries. I have only 2ft. of my small intestines left.
I had to first eat well blended food (put cook foods in the blender). Then I was able to start eating soft well cooked easy to digest foods. Toast, scrambled eggs, soup, chicken, rice potatoes, can fruit and vegetables. It also depends on how much small intestines you have left. Low fiber. No raw vegetables.

Thanks. That is very helpful especially knowing that others have gone through the same thing. Would be curious to know what one eats after 3 or 6 months after an operation. The same bland foods?

If the food is cooked soft then you should be able to slowly add it into your diet. But hard to digest foods are not a good idea to eat all the time as they can cause constipation or a blockage. Best thing to do is take it slow with eating foods. Small meals throughout the day is also important instead of big meals all at once.
Some people with short gut syndrome don't absorb enough fluids so adding extra fluids is also important but not during meals. Plain water doesn't absorb enough in the body so fluids needs to have sodium and glucose in them. Fluids with electrolytes are also good to drink. Stay away from spicy foods.

After a bowel resection to remove NETS, I lost the terminal ileum and part of the large intestine. I before surgery, i had food sensitivities, but it is more complicated now. The problem now is I have a lot of adhesions causing bowel obstructions. I had surgery about a month ago to address the adhesions and the surgeon said they never saw so many adhesions. Four days after discharge from the hospital, I was back with a bowel obstruction and back a second time 1 weeks later.I am now on a low fiber diet, 8 g fiber or less, but am unable to get nearly enough calories to maintain my current weight and am not able to eat dairy. I was thin to start.I have seen dietitians but they have not been much help. Do you have any suggestions, please? This is such a wonderful opportunity to connect with so many people with a variety of experiences.Thank you.

Oh I am so sorry to hear all of this for you!! I have been battling GI issues for a long time.. but not nearly to this extreme..I have alot of food sensitivities (I did the MRT and nutritionist for about 6 months.. was rather an unpleasant experience..) and I drink Vanilla Plant based ensure..2 per day.. you can get it on Amazon or directly from Abbott industries.. it tastes great chilled and (even with acid reflux.. takes great coming "back at you").. It is my staple food now.. what the price on Amazon.. usually about $4400 but lately one hour later will be $60.. and the fluctuates.. I find this has corrected my Vitamin D deficiency and also.. protein issues.. it's just a suggestion.. but the protein is plant based ..not whey.. not heavy metals like some powders..and I have gained some weight.. I'll be praying for you!!I hope this helps!! By His stripes we are healed!!

Thank you, standinginfaith, for your suggestion and wishes. I have not seen the product before but sadly it has oatmeal. Oddly, I am allergic to oatmeal. I appreciate all suggestions because I believe it will get me closer to a solution.
Take care.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I am in the exact same situation. Two previous surgeries for bowel resections and one for adhesions, last one in 2013 and am on low residue diet and severely underweight. I currently have multiple strictures and dilated loops in my intestines and struggle to keep weight. Down to 78 pounds now. I've been drinking Boost Plus chocolate for several years (it's really yummy!) and it contains 360 calories and 14g protein in a 8oz bottle. The key is to find low volume, high calorie and high protein sources. Recently I bought a case of Boost Very High Calorie chocolate and it contains 520 calories and 22g protein per 8oz bottle. I've just started this a few weeks ago and my weight has seemed to level off. I hope you can find some of these ideas helpful!
