Has anyone had a tight band feeling after total knee replacement?

Posted by mhort1213 @mhort1213, Feb 28, 2019

I am 8 weeks post TKR and have had this very tight band around my knee since week one. My Dr at 6 wks says it is normal and will go away. Has anyone else had this and did it go away and when?

Hello, this is my first post about post op tkr pain. I am about 11 months out and still experiencing significant pain all around knee, especially exterior side. I had a diagnostic test for nerve ablation and pain doctor said I have a 50:50 chance the ablation will work. Meanwhile I use diflocanec gel 3x/day, cbd cream at night, ice 2-3x/day, Tylenol before exercise, Lyrica at night to calm the nerves, massage, wear heavy sleeve on leg/knee almost all the time, hot tub almost every day. I used to cycle 100 miles a week but now maybe 40 and then have more pain. swimming doesn’t hurt as much but it’s pretty isolating. Hoping the ablation gives me some relief. Then wait and see how year 2 goes.

I only have 1 kidney (other removed w non cancerous rare tumor). I can’t use a lot of pain meds, creams, etc. Tylenol careful with but can use. I’m 8 months out and back
In PT. I have stiff knee feel like may have a pinched nerve on outer part of left knee. Have X-ray every 6 weeks at follow up. I’ve wondered how you know if the replacement is wrong size? I can’t get up from sitting without using both hands to lift myself. I have to just stand a few seconds before I can walk. I do stretches at home along with other exercises but knee gets stiff when sitting or sleeping. The pain keeps me from getting good sleep at night. Any suggestions that have helped others appreciated so I can ask my doctor about them first me.

I feel your pain. I am experiencing these symptoms 11 months since tkr. The experts say that these symptoms occur as a result of excessive scar tissue buildup in the individual's body. This might be true, but there are procedures that can be done to alleviate the discomfort. However, it seems as if some of these surgeons just want to move on to the next tkr surgery and cannot be bothered. Mine even refused to do additional imaging when I requested it. I believe that it is easier for them to uses scar tissue buildup as the "boogeyman "I wish there was a way for them to be held more accountable.
Suggestions for possible relief: Reach out to other orthopedic surgeons for their opinions, ask for a cat scan and ultrasound. Research Lyson removal surgery, manipulation, arthroscopy, white needling. Continue to do therapy and applying icing or heat.
All the best.

When your Ortho tells you something, anything, look him/her squarely in the face and ask yourself where does the word integrity come in. I'm into my seventh year of life changing conditions and listening to fairy tales from the best of the best. You're only into your eight week and I hope your tight band feeling goes away. If this is your only issue you are fortunate. Best of lucK!

I am 3 months post op and still have this tightness.
Just curious 🤔, what are the age groups here that have had tkr?
I am 58 and struggling.

Hi, I am now seven months post staged bilateral knee replacements and I am
69 . I had the tight band feeling for the first three months where it was quite obvious . Then the tight band feeling started to slow slowly diminish at five months. I remember commenting to someone when I was hiking downhill that it actually made my knees feel more supported due to the tightness around both knees. I no longer experience the tight band feeling, but I can still feel a little stiffness around both knees if I sit for prolong periods. I feel I’m in a much improved situation versus prior to my knee replacements. I hiked 11 km days ago and felt very comfortable during my hiking whereas before surgery I could only walk 10 minutes and had to sit down due to all the pain and discomfort and lack of mobility.

@mhort1213 I have had 2 TKRs but I do not recall a feeling like a tight band. What I have learned though is we all just tend to have different post-op problems and discomforts. You have obviously spoken to your doctor about this and he/she does not seem concerned. If you have confidence in him then you have to believe that he is experienced in this and that’s why he’s not concerned. Did he/she indicate how long before that would improve? I hope it will improve very soon.

Yes, I am five years removed from TRKR. I describe it as having the old white tape wrapped around my knee. After a really active day it still gets tight.

Yes! It has been 28 months and I still have tight band, pain and limited ROM.

Yes, been over 3 years for me. After 18 months my doctor told me I would have to live with it. There is another very long thread on this site about this very subject where people have discussed the various things they have tried and were told. It’s quite lengthy so I won’t even try to repeat it all here. As for myself, my doctor put me through PT 3 times. Astym, myofascial release was tried. Each thing they tried loosen the feeling temporarily. Gabapentin did not help.

I think it is nerve damage, something that can happen during surgery. My knee works fine. It just feels like I have a tourniquet on right below my knee, and my calf has the feeling of being compressed all the time. It feels worse when I’ve been out walking for a long period of time.

So sorry this has happened to you too. I came to this connect group almost 2 years ago in frustration. I’ve accepted my situation now. But have not given up hope that some poster or administrator of this group will share a cure for this. Until then, life goes on. Good luck and blessings to you.

Hi, I know this is an old post but It is very hard to find any info on it. I am four and a half years post ACL reconstruction and have that tight band feeling below my knee ( I actually say it feels like a metal tourniquet). Great ROM, no pain at rest, but the second I contract my quads or hamstrings it tightens and it gets worse the more weightbearing I do (walking is bad, running is excruciating) . It stops when I sit down. But everyday all day going about my life I have this and it feels like my leg is being ripped open below my knee. Have had multiple ortho consults, reams of physio, various braces, pain creams and meds, KT tape, acupuncture, nerve blocks, nothing touches it. Very difficult to live with. My MRI is fine. I am Canadian, was wondering if anyone has figured out what it is, was thinking of going Mayo but not sure there are any explanations left….

Hello amvrdv102487.
I know that you have had ACL reconstruction, while I had a TKR so this may not apply. After my TKR I had continuing pain that couldn't be traced to anything in my knee. I went to HSS for a consultation and the physician there suggested to my surgeon to "look at her back." The pain was traced to stenosis in my back, which could be relieved by injections for a time. After the injections ceased to be effective, I have now moved on to a spinal cord stimulator. Just a thought - has anyone considered the source of your pain to be in your back?
