Reclast injection for bone loss caused by letrozole

Posted by ljoh @ljoh, 6 days ago

I am a ten year breast cancer survivor. After taking tamoxifen for 5 years it was recommended that I begin letrozol. My recent bone density scan indicated significant bone loss and so it was suggested that I stop the letrozol and have a reclast injection. I have a very disturbing reaction to the first injection, but was told that it was likely the second would have a less serious side effect. I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar treatment plan and what their experience has been. I am very nervous about having a second injection. Thanks so much.

I also had a reaction to my first reclast infusion, basically felt like I had the flu for 10 days. Fevers, chills & body aches.
My second infusion was much better, slight fever for 2 days & some body aches for about 5 days, similar to my reaction to flu shots.

My doctor recommended being well hydrated before & the days following infusions, and also taking Tylenol the day before, day of, and continue until any side effects are gone. I did this both times.

I hope your second goes better.

Thanks so much for your reply. Did the infusion actually help with your bone loss? My reaction actually occurred about 5 days after the initial infusion and came in the form of excruciating pain in my shoulders and hands to the point where I couldn’t even dress myself. It gradually went away after about two weeks but was very scary and debilitating.

I haven’t had the second DEXA scan to see how effective the infusions were - insurance only pays for the scan every two years, so I’ll find out in August.

I would love to know if that worked for you. Good luck.

I am taking Xgeva injection for bone strength in past 3 months. I don't have side effect. Can you take Xgeva ? It seems mild. I take it once every 3 months.

Hi
I do reclast. This will be my 4th year. I got a compression fracture in my spine jan 22 2022 . I rolled over in bed . Had no idea I had osteopenia. The reclast injections have improved my spine and I just saw my endocrinologist. He said they are doing well. I will have a total of 5 . He said after #5 I will get a year off. The main thing is to be well hydrated they day before and take an energy drink the morning of plus take 1 during your I.V. along with tylenol. Have them infuse it of 40 minutes . You don't get the side effects if they go slow. My pharmacist told me that on my 1st injection.

Hi
My Dr didn't tell me anything. My pharmacist was the one who gave me the information. The pharmacist is always my go too
