Moving to MN to find a more supportive state

Posted by cassmoney @casscond, Sep 27, 2024

Hi y'all, I'm from Oklahoma, which is as bad with anti-LGBT laws as you have heard, and I also have several rare and complex conditions. I am graduating college soon and wanting to move to Minnesota not only for the accepting political climate (where my healthcare isn't banned) and where I can receive healthcare from Mayo and also attend school and work. I guess I am just using this as a sounding board.

@casscond, welcome. I see you have several reasons to move to Minnesota, including living with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a rare type of heart disease, as you posted elsewhere. I'm glad you also found the LGBTQIA Health Support Group here.

You mentioned that you'll be graduating soon. Congrats. Have you already applied to have your medical care possibly transferred to Mayo Clinic?

I actually have a phone call tuesday regarding moving my care to Mayo! I have it narrowed down between DC/the DMV and MN primarily due to weather as the heat is really hard on my heart and partially on transportation - I do not have a car at the moment and am searching for a place that has the trifecta of LGBTQ acceptance, great medical care, and a colder climate (and public transportation)
I don't know the ins and outs of having my medical care transferred, so I hope that my phone call Tuesday can help answer those questions. Otherwise - I will have to do some reading haha

I love living in MN! I left the city, but lived in downtown MPLS in a legendary gayborhood called Loring Park (Oak Grove St). MN is the state to be in right now.

I'm aiming to be there by September (wish I could move sooner given... everything) Thank you - I will keep that in mind!!

I'd be very interested in your thoughts after the move. We have several trips planned out west this summer, but given the current political climate and the potential lack of restroom availability, we are discussing alternatives. I fear for the concept of HUMAN Equality. This is nothing less than psychological terrorism.

I live in a very not-LGBT (or disability)! friendly state at the moment - we have a bathroom ban, gender affirming care ban, etc so I honestly think anywhere else would be better. It definitely has been some of the hardest times - it is going to be a looooooong 4 years (January felt like a decade)

I live in a red state and travel to mayo Jacksonville for care. The staff and doctors there are incredible at their jobs and are life changers.

Florida is not as bad as people think it is.

I have heard about, but have not researched, an organization called "The Rainbow Connection." From what I've been told, they offer overnight accommodations in safe houses while folks are migrating to safer states. They also have a sponsorship program to help newcomers get settled in a new community, from what I was told. Again, I have not personally researched this organization.

As a native Minnesotan I have lived in the Twin Cities 78 years. The Twin Cities community will welcome you with open arms! And healthcare is second to none. Good luck to you!
