Had TKR revision due to recalled replacement

Posted by lazygirl6 @lazygirl6, Sep 30, 2024

I am 5 months after TKR revision and still can’t get leg straight and range of motion is 100. Have pain. Sleep with brace to straighten leg which is not working. Had 9 dry needling treatments to relax muscles and ham string and quads. Had a manipulation under anesthesia that didn’t work. I am frustrated and some days depressed. I go to therapy 3 times a week since May and do many exercises at home. Bought an exercise bike and have a flexinator to help with range of motion. My life is at a stand still. If anyone can give me any encouragement that this will just take more time I would appreciate it. Thank you

Thank you for the "hug". Here is an update.
My revision surgery went extremely well. Different doctor, hospital, and PT.
It has been 3 months and I am very happy with the results. I credit the doctor for performing a "miracle". We are in San Antonio, Tx.

Hi lazy girl. How long after your initial TKR did you have the revision and for what reason did you need revision? I can't speak to having a revision but from what I've heard it is much more involved surgery than the original. I'm 8 months post surgical from TKR and still seeing big improvements. It's so true what the docs drill into our heads...it takes at least a full year to get the final results.

I had a TKR Oct 17, 2024. My leg wasn’t straight. I was told I had until 12 weeks post op to get it straight or the likelihood of it happening was it wasn’t going to happen. I was doing about 15 physio exercises at home daily. My physiotherapist said I was doing the right things, but told me to do five exercises for leg straightening in a row and listed them in order.

1) Start with rolled towel or hard 4-6” hard foamy under your ankle while you are laying flat on a hard surface like a bench used to workout in the gym. Put a pillow beneath your head. Hold this position for as long as you can. It may be 30 seconds at a time initially. Do it until you can hold it for 5 minutes.

2) Still laying on bench, put a hand towel folded up to about a 1 1/2 - 2 inch depth and place under your knee. Now press your knee cap down into the bench as hard as you can and hold for 2 minutes.

3) Still lying on the bench, put a rolled up hand towel under your ankle. Now lift your ankle about 2” off towel keeping your knee straight. Use an E.M.S. (Electric Muscle Stimulator) to stimulate your quad muscles while you do this exercise.

4) Stand up, tie a stretch exercise band around a chair leg (orange or green colour band). Place your leg inside and raise band to behind your knee or calf. Stand back to make it taught. Step back a little with other leg for balance. Now bend knee with band around it forward, then straighten your knee. Bend it forward like you would in a lunge position, then straighten your knee cap down. Do this 10 times, 3 sets.

Maybe there were only 4 exercises as I can’t recall anymore that I was doing for this.

Has anyone had breathing or can't seem to catch your breath? After a year or more, after TKR, I noticed this problem. I thought the breathing was from going off abilify because in old age taking this you can have a stroke, my psychiatrist said.
Then too I saw a pulmonoligist. I was diagnosed pre-asthma,
(Reactive airway disease). Prescribed inhaler.
The TKR metal is chromium cobalt. I had a blood test for possible allergic reaction to chromium cobalt. The orthopedic Dr. Looked at the results. He wasn't concerned or all good.
Now I have 2 TKR metal chromium cobalt. This breathing happens through out the day. I think the inhaler works, feels like the heart beats fast after the inhaler. Goes away later in day.
So the breathing business started a year after total knee surgery 2023, now 2025 I have the left knee replaced as of a week ago.
I had osteoarthritis. Very pre-op pain.
It's nice to text this as it's been on my mind.

Oh my goodness! Mine is made by Exactech. It's the Truliant model. Is that what you had? I'd heard about that recall. Having to do with how the parts were packaged I believe. I do hope and pray that the company rectified that problem. I'm 4 months out from my TKR and been having continued problems with painful clunking with every step or movement of the knee. Continued swelling and pain. Can't go downstairs or get up out of a chair without pain in the top of my kneecap. Just looking to find if anyone else is still having this problem almost 5 months out. 😭

I am 8 months out from TKR and 6 months out from manipulation. Manipulation took him a long time to get me to 130 degrees. I was told it is usually 39 seconds but it took him 5 minutes to get me there. I then went into cardiac arrest in recovery, so spent a couple overnights I hospital and didn’t start PT for 5 days instead of immediately.

I still am walking with cane, have shooting pain that wakes me from a deep sleep 4-5 times a night, can’t walk up/down stairs unless I 1-foot at a time, can’t get in/out of cars without help, and have issues getting out of chairs. I still do PT 3 x weekly and do my daily exercises. My bend is 100 but my extension is -12.

I see a surgeon that specializes in revision in 10 days and can’t wait! I’ve been told I develop scar tissue faster than most and they need to remove the whole implant and start over. I had ACL and meniscus tear surgery on same knee previously which is part of the issue.

If revision will help me get back walking, hiking, riding bike and playing a bit of pickleball I’ll go through all the pain again gladly!

Talk to a specialized revision surgeon about all your pain. If you are doing all the work it might not be you at all.
