Occasional alcohol during radiation treatment?

Posted by graybeard46 @graybeard46, Jan 25, 2025

My Dr. said an occasional cocktail would be ok, other Dr’s disagree , has anyone found any negative side effects with a drink once or twice a week ?

Once or twice a week...no...once or twice a night...no!

O' e had three different treatments involving radiation:

SRT
WPLN
SBRT

69 total individual treatments.

The only constraint was traveling, weekends were free of course but not the weekdays.

No side effects, I didn't change my diet, continued to exercise....

I am always ope. With my medical team so they knew and had no issues.

Remember, that's my experience, I may be an outlier when it comes to experience.

I start 6 months on Orgovyx tomorrow. Pharmacist I spoke with last week said alcohol is not contraindicated, so I am undecided about continuing my 1-2 cocktails per most evenings. I am considering cutting back for easier weight control and just because it won't hurt.

You should also cut back because of the recent report below, that any drinking at all can cause cancer. I had to quit 3 years ago because I went on blood Thinners and you can’t drink more than one drink a day with them. I was on blood thinners because Zytiga caused permanent problems with my heart. I used to drink a big Margarita in the afternoon after work and then wine or beer with dinner. Now 1 drink 1 alcoholic drink a week. Don’t really miss it, though a beer with spicy Mexican food is mandatory 😀.

The CDC reported this January 13, 2025
Drinking alcohol may also increase prostate cancer risk. All kinds of drinks that contain alcohol increase the risk of cancer.

When I had my radiation treatment, I had no warning that I should stop alcohol. I had one or two drinks at night every night, until about three years ago when I had to go on blood thinner, and I now only drink 1 drink, maybe once a week.

Sure didn’t notice an issue based on it, radiation never affected me in any way, had 7 weeks of it.

did you have proton therapy?

I didn’t during treatment but did soon after. It had a big, negative impact on incontinence and diarrhea.

I went dry for another week. Then I had 3 pints watching football over 3 hours and was ok. That was 10-11 days after last treatment.

@imnru
I had photon IMRT radiation. In 2014 when I had it Proton radiation was really not an option that anybody discussed.

12 years later and I’ve had no issues due to radiation other than incontinence six years later, The thing is that could’ve been caused by surgery as well, Or the combination of the two.

The Stanford study showed there was only a half a percent chance of secondary cancers from radiation.
