I’m new here ! Hello! I did not think about drinking high protein drinks in place of meat. I simply cannot digest any meat, I’ve come to that conclusion although my drs all say I need to eat meat for protein. None of them listen. BTW… I learned a torturous colon (TC) and a redundant colon (RC) are 2 separate things : the TC is when you have kinks and twists that can cause your food to literally get lodged in your colon, hence the reason for needing to use laxatives, staying hydrated. Yada, yada, yada!
The RC means your colon is too long for your body which can make it also have twists but not usually serious ones, but it definitely makes for a long time in moving food through your intestines, the longer digestion takes, the more toxins build up in your body which is why you literally feel like crap. Pun intended.
I have both conditions and both are congenital (born that way),
It has caused me to struggle with anorexia my whole life bc no matter how small I got, I always had bloating g which I thought was a fat stomach. I always had stomachaches as a child and was accused of just being lazy/not wanting to apply myself/ not wanting to go to school … you get the picture.
Well i wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my very late 50s, I’m about to have my 60th birthday.
The drs gave me that procedure where they scrape your esophagus, stating I had small non-cancerous cysts caused by GERD (which I’ve never had heartburn or GERD symptoms in my life!) and said I had a small hiatal hernia which they did not repair bc it was “so small”
A few months later my gallbladder went out and I had to have it removed but get this: my most pain was not on my right side but the lower left! Gastro Doc had me all worried, she said I may have ovarian cancer, since it ran in my family. I have a history of endometriosis- so I’m used to abdominal pain from that too. But this pain was unbearable.
So after they took out my gallbladder, the surgeon came in & said I have the “worst impaction of the colon “ he’d ever seen in his 20 years as a surgeon! So I still had the pain on the right side too- but I did have gallstones so the operation was definitely needed. They decided to keep me overnight and give me the “bowel prep” jug to drink and kept me until my bowels were completely empty. Let me tell you what - a little TMI here but I passed something huge that looked like something from the Stone Age and finally my right side stopped hurting and my bowels were clean! Now they having me living in Milk of Magnesia (MOM) tablets daily and doing a liquid MOM clean out once a week. It’s ruing my life! I have to plan everything around my bowel movements- which are seldom happening even with the MOM capsules, but I always feel like I have to go. And OMGOSH the constant cramps, gas, bloating and the anxiety it causes me makes my eczema flare up at times and/or I break out in hives.
I already have a traumatic brain injury that has left me disabled for life, though physically I am high functioning, I am on disability bc I have no shirt-term memory hardly and I can’t complete tasks, have rage and mood swings, etc.
Good Times!
So I have decided to stop the MOM & look for something natural .
The drs say MOM is magnesium therefore it’s natural, however it’s causing severe pain using it for so long
I can’t use gel-like fiber, the powder you mix with water it turns to gel in your gut (like Metamucil)
I can only eat sourdough bread, not a lot of heavy grains- the extra bulk gets stuck. And yes someone said they could feel their food moving down their digestive track- me too! But the drs look at me like I’m crazy when I say that!!
So I’ve heard of taking mineral oil or castor oil everyday. Both sound disgusting but the MOM is making me nauseous - so??
Any suggestions??
Thanks for reading-
Cat

cat,
Doctors who can’t help you to plan a diet without meat are not very current on nutrition.
I haven’t eaten meat in 40 years. Easy. I do eat dairy, so I’m not a vegan. There are tons of high protein foods that are not meat.
Maybe you could meet with a nutritionist.

Sorry you are suffering so much and dealing with rather complex health issues. However, I believe you will find help if you work with Holistic professionals at this point. Find a Naturopathic Doctor and Functional Nutritionist that specializes in gut issues (IBS, SIBO, etc.). These folks are extremely knowledgeable about helping with the fallout of gastrointestinal (and even endocrine) issues that "mainstream" Gastros are generally unable to help with (beyond treatments/surgery/drugs). There are specific supplements and specific probiotics, and as well, targeted diets that can help ameliorate symptoms and promote healing. I've been managing IBS-SIBO-C for over 8 years and have achieved relief and care from working with holistic professionals and following this route of care. Bless you and sending healing energy and hope your way.
