Help with stomach and abdominal discomfort when lying down

Posted by undiagnosed2013 @undiagnosed2013, Jun 19, 2021

I have not been able to get a full night sleep for almost 4 months now. I take Maalox before I go to bed and maybe 2 more times throughout the night. I had an endoscopy recently that was normal. I have been taking a PPI for the past month to see if this was GERD related, but it does not seem to help. I had a recent abdominal CT scan with oral contrast that was normal. I am interested to see if anyone else has this issue and maybe could help me?

what saves me is tsp baking soda 8 oz water and a shot of vinegar. the combination does fizz up over the glass so sometimes i skip the vinegar. it works instantly.

Does anybody have issues when stopping ppi. I heard they are difficult to wean off. I have gastritis and my doctor only has me on 20 mg of famotidine 2 times a day. Also pepto bismo to coat my stomach.

You can get rebound reflux for a few weeks. You can lessen the odds of getting that by very slowly weaning off. the pharmacist said I could cut my pills in half or quarter, so check if you can do that with yours.

Crikey, what a combo! The baking soda is very alkaline, and the vinegar acidic. If it works for you great! for most people, stick with the baking soda.

As others have mentioned, switching to low acid, whole food diet and instituting lifestyle changes like raising you head while in bed (I sit up completely, others just do a 45 degree incline), not eating at least 3 hours before bed, things like that. You may also want to try taking an alginate like Gaviscon Advance the UK version before going to bed. The alginate plugs up your stomach for a few hours so no acid gets out. don't sleep on your right side, that side makes it easier for acid to escape. You can check out laryngopharyngeal reflux on Jamie Koufman's web site,, see if there are tips that you can try.

i think the three are fun because it froths up. an acupuncture student told me that vinegar is what the acid stomach needs to calm down. counterintuitive right?
