Diverticulitis

Has anyone had part of their intestine removed? I have diverticulitis and sometimes I still experience discomfort and constipation.

I’m on my 3rd diverticulitis attack and I’ve decided enough is enough! I decided to just eat better and exercise. I have known 2 people who died after getting a hole in their intestines from diverticulitis. One passed with no surgery the other a few days after part of his intestine was removed. No thank you! I’ll do better.

Hi Arlene,
Sorry to hear about your 3rd attack. Have you had a colonoscopy?

The most helpful thing you could do is a good diet. Making sure things keep things moving through your colon. Stool softeners can help if needed or a laxative. I hate those. They have found that nuts and corn do not case diverticulitis .. from what I have read. Crossed fingers .. haven’t had diverticulitis since 2018. It was not the usual left side pain. It was throughout my belly. A colonscopy showed I had multiple diverticular (pockets) throughout my colon. I am allergic to to Flagyl (one of the go to antibiotics for diverticulitis) that is taken with Cipro to take care of the infection. Cipro took care of it alone. It can cause tendon damage .. so far blessed not to have it.

You should schedule one to find out how bad it is and not wait.

I have smoldering diverticulitis, just spent 2 days in hospital on IV antibiotics. They cannot do a colonoscopy when swelling in the colon is present. Hoping it will finally go back to normal. There could be a cancer under it but at this point only by removing part of my colon can it be found.

Yes, understand. (Been there) Hoping the antibiotics will help and are you on meds for inflammation too?
They said that my ovary in scan was enlarged, and it wasn't. It was just how bad my episode was.
I stayed on inflammation meds and low residue diet to keep mine at bay until I had the surgery.

PS - Just to clarify. I was diagnosed with diverticulitis 10 years ago on routine colonoscopy for IBS.
In 2022 I started having episodes that I did not understand.
When I had my yearly physical, I told my Dr. about them. (there were 2) She recommended a GI Dr. and after seeing him I had the colonoscopy. He told me that it was bad and that I would keep having episodes that will worsen over time.
