Haven't had parathyroidectomy yet. Two VA MDs - one an endocrinologist and the other an endocrine surgeon - thought that Norman in FL was a bad place to go for surgery. I didn't ask each of them why they (who weren't together with me- different day with each one) felt or know that Norman's not so special, not so wonderful as it claims to be.

Maybe I'll have parathyroidectomy with surgeon Eren Berber of Cleveland or maybe with the VA-- I don't know yet. You see, I could travel alone to a surgery center but have no one, no helpers in my life, to then accompany me home after surgery-- the surgery location could be very far from where I live. [Most respectable medical/surgical businesses will not let a patient go home alone after various surgeries. I suppose this is due to state law in the states where they're located.] And I don't know what troubles/difficulties I'd have living alone, with no helpers, after parathyroidectomy. This is a complication I suppose for me.

Hi @musicbart - I have had three parathyroidectomies over the years due to a MEN1 mutation. I had my first done at the Norman clinic in Tampa and the remainder at Cleveland Clinic. They both were good surgical experiences. That said, the one main difference is that Cleveland Clinic keeps you overnight after the surgery to ensure your calcium level and associated blood work is stable afterwards. After my first surgery at Norman, they sent me home as usual but I did have to call the on call Doctor that evening due to shakes/tremors from the calcium change. It was a bit of a fire drill but eventually resolved. I personally believe that keeping you afterwards overnight is a good thing and chose to go that route for my remaining surgeries at Cleveland Clinic. Hope this helps - Matt
