With so many bone meds , it's hard they all seem very bad... Fosamax sucks
We all want to increase bone density and prevent fractures.

@hmbrglr Tymlos is very easy to use, and the dosing on the pen is adjustable, a big plus for those of us who are sensitive. I tried half dose, went down to 1/4 dose and ended up doing almost a full dose for most of the time.
I was on foteo for 2 years and was told that is the max you can be on it. Anyone been on it longer
@slaws55 for certain patients, Forteo can be taken longer now.
Online:
The new recommended treatment duration section of the drug label states that the use of Forteo for more than 2 years during a patient’s lifetime should only be considered if a patient remains at or has returned to having a high risk for fracture.
This is why it's so confusing. Bone med to strengthen rebuild stop deterioration of bones... Then, if you are on it you could hsve a thigh fracture or another fracture or jaw necrosis, teeth loss..
Frustrated 😠 scared
dukemayo, there are two osteoporosis medications that don't incur the risk of osteonecrosis: Forteo and Tymlos. Either drug can be prescribed to hasten healing of fractured bone and they are the drug of choice to aid in the recovery of osteonecrosis and the sheer fracture identified in AFF (atypical femur fracture).
You might have an allergic reaction to one or the other which is scary.
Our bones are constantly breaking down and being replaced with new bone.
Tymlos and Forteo have the same mechanism of action. To have the strongest bone fissured bone needs to be cleared away and replaced with new bone. Medications, other than these two "anabolics," work in part by stopping or slowing down the clearing away of fissured bone.
The anabolics enhance the entire process.
It's interesting, but not much fun, juggling these medications to avoid fracturing.
slaws55, there was a worry that these medications could cause cancer of the bone because it seemed to cause cancer in the rats used for original studies. A genetic cause for cancer in the rats is now blamed and aftermarket studies have disabused us of the the association.
A different issue could make continued use unwise. This class of medication works by increasing the process of clearing fissured bone and replacing it with new bone by increasing the cells that repair. Those cells stimulate production of the cells that clear damaged bone. It is thought that at 18 months the balance between the cells shifts to an imbalance toward breaking down the old bone. We can chart the balance with the use of bone markers. But we don't know the perfect balance.
It is clear that in the early burst of osteoclasts with Forteo or Tymlos humans build strong, integrated bone.
I am finding more specialists who are prescribing a third year. The prescribing physician I see has prescribed a third year of Forteo. My frax risk is 12 and 13 %.
If you have been off Forteo for a while, two more years would be a good option for you.
CTX drops rapidly after a month away from the medication.
I've heard of patients prescribed four successive years.
I hope to be on it till eternity with brief interludes.
Thanks for that info. I went down to 1/4 dose just started after a bad reaction to fill dose . How long until you worked your way up?
@vickizuckerman82 I think the timing is individual. And a half dose ( 4 clicks) and 3/4 dose (6 clicks) have therapeutic value according to my doctor.
I probably did, say, 10 days at two clicks (1.4 dose) and went to 3 for a week, then maybe two weeks at 1/2 dose and so on. I ended up at 7/8 long term. Mysteriously, I never really tolerated full dose though I did it a few times to see.
You will need extra needles and also, make sure to refrigerate the Tymlos so it lasts a little past the month.
I still had large gains!
