Diagnosed in FL, but need the treatment in GA - 4hrs away

Hello - I am desperately trying to help a friend who has no family and people have pretty much given up on helping her. It shatters my heart! She is a kindergarten teacher, 48 yrs old, with a debilitating muscular disease that presented itself about 3 years ago. She started FMLA 2 weeks ago. She went to Mayo in Jacksonville and finally got a diagnosis after who knows how many doctors. Her doctors at Mayo fought the insurance and they were denied SEVEN times! I pressed her for it and she tried one more time and it was just approved! Here's the catch....we live in Columbus, GA and "they", being Mayo or insurance, are saying that treatment can only be in Jacksonville, FL. It is an infusion, 3 times a week at first, then twice a week for 12 weeks. I am a teacher and am not able to take her, but she is so desperate for help. This is her only chance. I know they'll pay for a flight there and back, hotel, Uber and all, but she can't be alone because she's not able to get up if she falls or go up/down any stairs because of the weakness in her legs. She is alone, afraid, and I feel helpless. All that to say, is there ANY way we can request a hardship that will allow her to have the treatment in Columbus, GA instead of traveling to Jacksonville, FL? This is the last resort and only medical treatment left for her to try; I don't want her to give up. Any advice or direction for help would be appreciated!

Your friend is in tough situation. I am glad she got a diagnosis and treatment plan, but the logistics of treatment plan is definitely a problem. Mayo often provides diagnosis and treatment plans and patients follow up with their providers at home for treatment.

You mentioned "they" are requiring treatment at Mayo. Has she called her insurance company to get clarification? Also, she might portal her provider and ask about treatment closer to home.

I am going to start by saying I know NOTHING abt Mayo. I am new, looking for other things, BUT, I am trying to think of options for your friend, so here is one that might work or maybe you can riff on it... What abt going to Jacksonville and hiring a "Visiting Angel" or other non-skilled nursing company? They aren't cheap, but might be covered OR maybe payable thru FSA accts? I do not know, but Visiting Angels is a company I used when my mom had dementia, and all it was was just a buddy-friend... not a nurse or even a CNA... just a hired companion to "be there" for whatever! And honestly, her VA was so personable, you would think we had all known her forever! Upbeat and fun! Might be just what your friend needs!!! She can drive her and just be around... I hope this helps!!!
