Has Anyone Tried Chinese Herb Therapy?

Posted by bryanbay @bryanbay, Dec 9, 2022

I'm a 60's something male in my 5th year of idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. The condition steadily worsens; any particular six month period is worse than the previous period.

Lately I've been seeing an acupuncturist who, in addition to the needling, suggested I try a blend of Chinese herbs. The name of the blend is "Dang Gui Si Ni Tang"; its brewed into a tea.

I'm wondering anyone has heard of this tea or has experience with it.

Thanks

My peripheral neuropathy has caused my feet and now my calves to be so cold. Whether it’s the neuropathy or poor circulation caused by neuropathy. I wonder if anyone else with cold feet and legs have tried compression socks, and did they help. I don’t have swelling. Actually my calves have gotten so skinny I’m afraid compression sock won’t stay up.
Please place this post in the correct category. I didn’t know where else to post it.

Hello! For what it’s worth I will chime in! The socks come in different sizes and you could take them back. I got a large the first time and I have stick legs! Lol They fit but are hard to get on and off but they do help. It seems when I do wear them my feet and legs don’t hurt as much at night when I pull them off.

I comment here and there, but mostly, I complain. My Idiopathic Neuropathy gets worse all the time...
I learned a hard lesson the other day, so I want to pass it on as a warning. I went out and was in a restaurant, corner booth in cold weather waiting for my friends to come. They were a little late ( bit deal), but the Birthday celebration was almost two hours. My feet started to "burn/freeze", hurt, but I tried to ignore it. The pain went up my calves for the first time. When we finally left, I tried to warm them up when I got home. Maybe I should have soaked my feet in warm water, or done SOMETHING DIFFERENT!. It was like I opened a door to another level of pain!! SINCE THEN, MY PAIN HAS WORSENED, AND THERE SEEMS TO BE NO RELIEF. A word to the wise: Take care of yourself. Do not let your pain get out of hand if you can help it. I learned a hard lesson. Winter is the WORST for me. Does anyone use electric socks in this group?

Acupuncture did not work for me. However, I have been taking Chinese herbs right now for the past two months but it has provided great relief. My burning and electric shocks have subsided. I don’t know the name of the herbs but it is working for me so far. The key verdict is whether the pain will come back once I stop taking it. I will report back. But for now, I am amazed how well the herbs are working for me.

I'm sorry for you...Yes...this winter was horrible for me. My neuropathy also progressed in 3-4 years...probably Covid vaccine induced neuropathy. I've received 5 of them! I walk outdoors in my slippers all the time, can't put any shoe on! Numbness and stiffness during night (I can sleep well fortunately for now) progresses into pressure (on the feet in the morning), pins and needles, and after short walk outddors into stubbing and pain...standing and walking (every single step) adds more pain, in warm indoor spaces overheating of the nerves... After the afternoon naps horrible electric pins and needles. Barely can do basic chores at home, and walk few blocks around the building for groceries...
Remedies that help:
1. Lidocain cream (worls an hour)
2. Castor oil with the eucaliptus oil as a base
3. Capsaicin cream, helps but can cause overheating of the nerves...
4. THC tincture, stil experimenting with it. Definetely helps with the pain (2x5mg) helps for hours...but gets you "high" and slows you down. Will see the cannabis rehab doctor today for proper dosing.

After taking it for a month, my burning pain was pretty much gone. I took for another month just to make sure. But it did not get rid of my mouth burning (my burning sensation usually occurs on different parts of the body depending on the hour and mouth burning sensation was everyday). I went back to the herbalist and he gave me a different concoction of the herbs for the mouth burn. I have been on it for the past week and the burning sensation reduced by 80%. The verdict is whether the pain will come back after I stop taking it.
I would recommend that you try it. But make sure you go to a reputable one. Don’t get a full month worth of the herbs, just buy 5 to 7 days worth to try and see if you notice improvement. My herbalist said you should start to see improvement and if not, he needs to tweak the concoction (he didn’t need to in my case). The herbs were expensive but was worth it. I recommend brewing the herbs yourself (vs. buying it packaged).
No side effects for me except the tea tastes terrible. But it was worth it.

Where and how should I find a good herbalist please?

I live in NYC and went to a herbalist in Chinatown who is a friend of a friend. But it took a lot to explain my history of symptoms because the herbalist did not speak English. I would ask acupuncturists (they are more readily accessible) for recommendations. They usually know herbalists since often acupuncture treatment is combined with herbal treatment. I found that many doctors also know reputable acupuncturists.
If not, look up your local Asian herbal/alternative medicine associations. Who knows if this will work for you but I totally understand pursuing all alternatives to find anything to alleviate this miserable condition. I hope it works for you. All the best!

Hi Bcool123. I too have freezing feet very often. My circulation tests have come in great so no problem there. I can't wear compression socks, and don't need them, because any pressure at all on my feet equals pain, even on max dose of gabapentin. I wear old stretched out thin socks and oversized footwear. I use an electric warming blanket on them at home and sometimes rub 4% lidocaine on them at nite which gives me about an hour of zero pain. Hope that helps. Johnmacc

I had 1-2 winters where my feet were incredibly cold and I bought electric socks to wear around the house - they were great!
