Foot pain with Anastrozole?

Posted by lhwoz @lhwoz, Oct 17, 2023

Hello all-
I have read on this topic from posts that were from 4-5 years ago but looking for your experience from more recently.

I am 56 and on month 6 of Anastrozole. I had ILC stage 1/2 with lumpectomy/re excision and a course of radiation.

I have alwasy been very active as a lifestyle, hiking, gym, Orangetheory etc. Hike all over zion/Bryce Canyon in early May when radiation done to celebrate and remind myself if who I am and will be.

Since Aug I have had some achilles tenderness but more debilitating is crazy foot/heel pain especially in the am or when I get up from sitting/non movement. I have been attributing it to achilles tendinitis(self diagnosis šŸ™ ) but I am finally thinking this is the anastrozole? I literally walk /hobble when I am first out of bed. I have some hand pain also but it feels just more like arthritic/tightness and not as noticeable/not affecting daily activities or exercise. Knees also feel out of sorts but I've had that here and there prior to this.

Can anyone share their experience with the foot /heel situation? Should I try a different AI or will this subside?

Much love and support to you all!

I am on day 14 of anastrozole and no side effects. Iā€™m interested in knowing when side effects started with others. Iā€™ve read as soon as 24 hours after first dose.
TIA for sharing. Bless all of you on your journey to become cancer free❣️🤟🙏

This drug mostly caused menopause related symptoms in me, hot flashes were the biggest thing. I did have muscle stiffness but it was relieved completely by upping my walking game a little.
I was never really sure, how much was the anastrazole and how much were leftovers from the other treatments.
I personally know quite a few women who have sailed through the five years with none of trigger fingers, foot pain etc. but they are rarely the people you find posting on a forum. I hope you continue to be symptom free, and continue to join in the conversations.
Did you have other treatments for breast cancer?

Yes. I had IDC. Stage 1 grade 2. Had a single mastectomy with a direct prefilled implant the same day 11 weeks ago. I followed all the post surgery recommendations and my recovery has been fairly easy.

When I first took anastrozole I felt lower leg cramps. I started taking Osteo bi-flex, but the aches continued. After stopping and starting again, I am not bothered with the leg issues. I also began taking a glucosamine compound with chondroitin. It has made a real difference.

I had the same symptoms on anatrzole. Plantar fasciitis on one foot. Stiff fingers and of course the trigger fingers as well. I went off of anatrzole after 6 months. I am not in a good place as my cancer has returned with a vengeance. I do know you should not just suffer the effects. There are multiple other treatment options, but do know that if you just carry on it can be permanent. Talk to your doctor so the side effects can be managed or you can go on a different medication

So sorry to hear that tire cancer returned. May I asked what type of cancer you have? I am on anastrozole and an experiencing three side effects. I am afraid to stop the anastrozole because I have triple positive breast cancer. Did the cancer returned because you stopped the anastrozole or it returned before you stopped the med? Thanks

They returned a year after I stopped anatrzole. If I would have known this was going to happen I would have tried something else. However, there was only 1% risk for me to quit. They told me it was just bad luck that it came back. Unfortunately, now I have stage four breast cancer in my bones.

Good morning!
I started Anastrozole in February 2022.
On 23 I had trigger thumb, resolved with Cortisone injection. On 24, I developed Plantar Faciitis and Mortonā€™s Neuroma. Both resolved with PT and again Cortisone injection.
The best recommendation was from my Oncologist, to instead of taking pain killers, drink a glass of 100% Tart Cherry Juice, or capsules as recommended by the manufacturer.
Trust me, it works, that is my to go choice when having bone or muscle pain.
I prefer to continue dealing with the side effects than the alternative if I were to chose stopping the Anastrozole.
To your health!

I was on this drug for 13 months with no problems then bang- severe reaction, my fingers curl, aches all over in different places and different times, etc. Been off this drug my Oncologist agreed for two months and at least the first side effects, terrible depression (really bad) and legs feeling like I was trying to walk through knee deep water have disappeared. I couldn't live this way anymore, at 77 I want to enjoy the years I have left. Hoping I'll feel better the longer I m off the drug. This Is a severe reaction, I know women who took or are taking this drug for years with no problems at all. Just hope this helps someone out there, you are not alone..
