After my Whipple in 2012, my surgeon prescribed omeprazole and wanted me to take it for one year. Stomach acid, GERD, etc were never issues for me. He explained it was to prevent issues with healing and lacerations where the anastomose was created between the bottom of the stomach and the intestine. After the year, I came off it in June 2013 and never had issues.

My surgeon said I could quit all of my medications that I did not take before surgery. Relatively healthy other than pancreas cancer which is a big one. I only take daily vitamins but I do also use Creon not at all three meals only use when I eat something that I need it for. I had a lady in my room that had the Whipple surgery 3 weeks after I did but her tumor was not cancerous and her Doctor told her to take Pepcid for the rest of her life. Just was wondering why there are so many different answers for this question. I know everything doesn't work for everyone but why so many different answers.
