What can I do?

Posted by annette1111164 @annette1111164, 5 days ago

I had a total knee replacement on Monday. Tonight it's Fri. I'm miserable. I'm about 120 lbs overweight, also have ADHD and depression. I've been struggling with pain management and keeping track of when to take the 3 different pain meds Tylenol, oxycodone, ketalorac. Along with all my regular meds. I try to get up and walk a bit but am avoiding stairs cuz my knee feels unstable. Using walker. Having trouble remembering how often, how long to ice. Having trouble doing basic self care like wiping butt or getting into our tiny shower at the bottom of our rickety stairs. No poop for 5 days. Taking stool softeners. Finally have had 4 episodes of explosive liquid diarrhea, after horrible stomach cramps, husband has had to clean my poop. I'm so embarrassed. I'm stinky, having knee pain, arms and back hurt from using them more, hard to do the knee exercising, sometimes get nauseated, and am having trouble sleeping. I realize I have to start getting back to hygiene and walking around and doing normal things, but all this feels like too much to work on at once. I'm physically and emotionally overwhelmed. I feel like I can maybe push thru one goal or task at a time. I know I'm supposed to be working on all of it, but I just can't. What should I do? Where to start? Dr? Mental health therapist? PT? Ot? Social worker? In home help? Nurse? I'm 60 years old. Female. Start our patient PT on Mon. Not trying to be a wimp. Any encouragement or ideas would be appreciated. My conditions are obesity, type 2 diabetes, ADHD, depression, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome. and grade3/4 osteoarthritis in both knees. Thank you.

I'm surprised that your Ortho did a TKR in your condition. At 60 years old going into a tramatic surgery you should be both physical and emotional well. Following one of my three TKR, one was a revision, I could hardly move much less go to PT. I called my doctor's office and they arranged to have someone come from AMEISYS (I live in TN) to my residence and provide all that was necessary to bring me through this difficult period until I could go to PT on my own. It was a woman with all the skills of a caregiver, a nurse, and therapist who administered PT, blood work, and monitored meds. She visited 3-4 times a week for three weeks. I will forever be gratful to her. Medicare took care of most of the cost.

My heart goes out to you. TKR & then Revision TKR with MUA following each procedure were the most challenging times of my life at age 63 and at 67. I could see through some of the physical challenges…but the procedures took a toll on my mental health. I’m still struggling with weight management, being social, and self image as a result of my new “normal”. There are so many success stories with TKR…many patients return to their usual activity level or have an improved quality of life. Great for them.
The rest of us with struggles and less than great results (for reasons not our fault) need to suffer through while seeking help & solutions.
For my Revision TKR, I was scheduled to start PT the day after the procedure…thank goodness a patient care advocate at the hospital coordinated 2 weeks of Home PT, both physical & occupational. She also had a shower bench delivered to the house (I already had a walker, crutches & raised toilet seat w/handles from first procedure). The therapists were a huge help and made the transition to going out daily for therapy a little easier. They were especially good with coordinating meds, offering suggestions on how to get through basic tasks and with making my home accessible and safe for me to get around. I have a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Perhaps you can arrange home health care until you feel better and are more mobile. My surgeries were in winter…so I had spring & warmer weather ahead to look forward to, and to returning to long walks & aqua fitness, just being mobile & out/about again. Ask for help. Share your struggles with your orthos office on follow up visits and with your PT’s. I wish you some relief, some positive breakthroughs and an all around good, if not great outcome. My favorite saying comes to mind…”this too shall pass”.

You hang on! It will get better! You are tough and do not forget that. You are smack dab in the worst recovery zone period but it will get better, every day will be slightly better - do not give up. May the Lord be with you.

I wish doctors were more open and honest to patients regarding the recovery from a TKR.

I am so sorry that you are suffering so much. I think ouch89's idea of someone to come to your home might be a good idea. Hopefully, you can get some help soon.

Prayers. Ice 24/7. Eat with your meds. Sleep when you’re tired. I got depressed too. I’m starting week 3. Just do what you can. Keep a written log of your meds. Take one hour at a time. And I pray a lot.

Have you tried listening to your favorite music? It might distract you a bit from your awful pain.
