Length dependent SFN and statins
Hi,
I stopped Rosuvastatin (Crestor) at the end of September after getting my punch biopsy which confirmed the length-dependent SFN. I am on gabapentin (1800 mg.) for the burning and pain. I recently had my lipid panel done and my cholesterol went from 149 to 239 with LDL now 156, so my new PCP suggested Crestor. I am mostly vegan with little processed foods, so there is not much room for improvement there. It seems that it is familial hypocholestemia because I am the "poster child of good eating" and have been for at least 8 years. What alternatives have helped?? Is Zetia working for anyone without worsening the neuropathy? Also, I read that gabapentin can increase your LDL!!

@jan64, I'm definitely not a poster child for good eating but I have been making head way and have lost some weight and kept if off for the past 5 or so years. My cholesterol numbers were always borderline and my several different primary care docs were always trying to get me to take statins and I always chose not to because of my neuropathy. I don't have pain but do have the numbness associated symptoms. My new PCP shared some statin alternative information to try and help me but not sure if you may already have seen it. I attached of PDF of what was given to me in case it might be helpful.

Thanks, John. I have not tried the plant stanols yet. I already eat oatmeal or oat bran every day along with all of the other dietary suggestions, though I use olive oil very sparingly. My neuropathy is painful, and I want to avoid the statins. Since my family history of stroke and heart disease is high, I will probably try the Zetia .
