Posted by mumsa48 @mumsa48, 4 days ago

I have gastroparesis which is very painful, osteoporosis moderate nerve damage and severe spine damage. Is there any medicine that can help with osteoporosis even though I have gastroparesis

Go to an endocrinologist. There are injections that can be given instead of taking by mouth or that are not bisphosphonates. For example, Prolia injection once in 6 months.

Hi mumsa48!! I have gastroparesis, Crohn`s, SIBO and osteoporosis. I had seven spontaneous vertebral fractures that required surgery. In 2020 they implanted a SCS (spinal cord stimulator). This helped with the pain, but is not totally gone. I was on many oral medications for osteoporosis : Prolia, Fosamax and Boniva before I started Reclast infusion once/ year. I also tried Forteo . Finally my endocrinologist recommended Evenity injections every month for one year. After the treatment with Evenity there was an improvement and my doctor took me off of all the medications for one year, except oral calcium ( I use calcium citrate gummies). I had a bone density scan in November 2024, the osteoporosis is worse now. I think in our case, osteoporosis is hard to treat because we deal with malabsorption and nutrients deficiencies. I exercise regularly and try to eat food rich in calcium that I can tolerate. I am lactose intolerant and have gluten sensitivity. You can always talk with your doctor to find the best treatment for you. Good luck!

thank you, I have had 2 major back surgeries, the 2nd one in 2007 which they put a cage in my back. Unfortunately, I need a third one as injections never helped, nor the stimulator. After giving 25 vials of blood 6 mos ago, it all showed calcium levels fine, and every tests were also fine. So I am a fine speciment except for neuropathy, moderate nerve damage all over my body, needing a third surgergy, gastroparesis, osteoparosis and severe arthritis. I am on 75mg pregabalin, 10mg oxy for the pain,I only take it when the pain is terrible, celebrex, pantepraz0le, a trace levothyroxine. December 2024 I was sick with the flu and lost 15lbs and since then I barely eat. I am trying the gastro diet, but so tired of all the pain everywhere. Sorry this is so long, but I have so many physical problems they are creating depression. Anyway, good luck and keep fighting the fight.

I am sorry you are going through all this. Have you tried posting on Connect's Osteoporosis and Bone Health section?

I have increased my muscle mass over the last two years (and hopefully my bone density, haven't be re-tested) thru strength training. I don't know if this is an option for you. If you do end up taking a drug, be sure you research the side effects so you can make an informed decision. For instance, with Prolia if you get that injection you cannot just stop taking that drug, it may cause fractures. You need to relay to another drug. But some doctors don't know that. I am not saying the drugs are bad for you, just that you need to fully understand their benefits v. risks and how to manage the administration of the drug. I got dinged big time with not understanding omeprazole, which I was told by my doctor had no side effects and I should take for the rest of my life. Live and learn!

Good luck!

mumsa44, I hope you can find some something that works for you. I follow a strict diet for gastroparesis. We don't have a lot of choices. I cook from scratch and never go out to eat. Stay strong!!!

I see you take pantoprazole. It's a PPI which can cause bone loss, so you can see if you can wean off that and take something else for acid reflux. On the internet it said something about taking also octreotide with pantoprazole to reduce bone loss. I have no idea about that, so ask your doctor/s.

Hello. My doc and I decided a Reclast injection, which is done once a year for osteoporosis, is what we will try. So far my insurance has approved, but I haven’t been able to schedule the infusion yet. I also have numerous GI issues so didn’t want to use anything oral.
