Osteoporosis medication continuity?

Posted by r2d2rr @r2d2rr, Jan 9 6:39pm

I am an active 52 year recently diagnosed with Osteoporosis and prescribed Tymlos. Here are my DEXA scan results:
eport
T-SCORE: -3.6
Z-SCORE: -2.7
LEFT FEMORAL NECK:
BMD: 0.699 g/cm**2
T-SCORE: -1.4
Z-SCORE: -0.5
TOTAL LEFT HIP:
BMD: 0.714 g/cm**2
T-SCORE: -1.9
Z-SCORE: -1.3
RIGHT FEMORAL NECK:
BMD: 0.681 g/cm**2
T-SCORE: -1.5
Z-SCORE: -0.7
TOTAL RIGHT HIP:
BMD: 0.780 g/cm**2
T-SCORE: -1.3
Z-SCORE: -0.8

I will be starting Tymlos soon, but considering my age ( 52 ) am afraid of starting medication. I run, do yoga and eat a healthy diet and am on the petite side could the scan be wrong ? Is there something that I could do before starting medication. Thank you in advance for your response

My doctor had an interesting observation and she said some women
develop Osteo in the first couple years of menopause and you are in that classic period.

my comments:
Most of us are aware that most women, develop osteoporosis or osteopenia:
that there is a marked drop in bone mineral density at
perimenopause?, during and the years after menopause.
What is the progression of BMD loss the years after menopause?
without intervention of any kind.
I have not been able to find studies on this.

This is just interesting or worrisome:
I read in some studies that many women with osteopenia
will fracture - just as much or even more -
than those in the osteoporosis range.
So, if we move our T scores from osteoporosis to osteopenia;
will we have a slightly better fracture risk, or same.
(excluding the Frax Score.)

what a wonderful exercize routine. ! and great diet supplement.
Taking HRT - adding the supplements, better diet, exercize
and everything else you are doing; has that helped
your BMD scores significantly?
How many more years are you allowed to be on HRT?
What modality happens if you are taken off this.

I can’t know for sure what role all of these played. I started receiving DEXA scans in 2014 at the age of 53. My scores were in the osteopenia range at that time and remained there until 2018 when they just barely slipped into osteoporosis.

I was started on Fosamax and my scores moved back into osteopenia in 2021 but follow-ups DEXAs in 2023 and 2024 showed that my hip was again in the osteoporosis range.

My spinal T-score has always been in the osteopenia range but I still fractured just over a year ago.

I can only hope that the HRT and other measures perhaps helped slow down the bone resorption and that I might have been worse off without it.

I plan to stay on HRT for the rest of my life. My OB/GYN is ok with this.

I have osteoporosis in my femoral neck -2.6, and everything else is osteopinia. I started doing YouTube exercises BRICK HOUSE BONES with Dr. Lisa Moore. She has great videos that really help

gosh, sorry to hear you had a fracture, even in
osteopenia range.
You are doing so much: diet and exercize.
I didn't realize that you can stay on HRT your entire
life, depending, of course, on your circumstances.

Yes I've seen Brick House Bones and have some
of her videos on my computer.

Hi oopsiedaisy. I have Osteoporosis and was told to startvon Fosomax but I am terrified of these side effects. I was thinking about a low dose estrogen patch but I am 66 and don't know if my dr would ptescribe that bc of my age. Can I ask what age you started on HRT and do you have any bad side effects from it. TIA

I was 51 when I started on HRT. My doctor prescribed Estrogel 0.05% topical gel that I rub into my forearms daily. I went through menopause at 55 and my doctor added oral progesterone 100 mg per day.

I have not had any side effects from it; in fact, it made my life so much easier. I was having hot flashes, brain fog, and low energy before going on it. My osteopenia had not yet been diagnosed; I had my first DEXA at age 53.

I think taking the Fosamax during the first two years was good as I did see significant improvement in my T-scores. I don't think I should have stayed on it as long as I did, though. I never had any serious side effects while taking it like some do (digestive issues, reflux, bone pain, joint pain, etc.).

Thank you so much for getting back to me! I appreciate that. I think I
should try Fosamax bc I am 66 and the risks if transdermal estrogen at my
age outweigh the benefits. I only wish I knew about it years ago. It's
great that you started within the 10 ur timeframe of menopause. Wishing you
continued bone health! : )
