Hip revision surgery - scared spouse!

Posted by hopefulwife1 @hopefulwife1, Nov 19, 2022

My 59-year old, very fit, very active husband had a hip replacement surgery 2 years ago. He never got out of pain and our local surgeon kept telling him it was a soft tissue issue. He has been in PT for over two years - prepping for the first surgery and very committed to all the exercises post-surgery.

Long story short - we come to Mayo for help and the surgeons immediately see that the stem of his replaced hip is loose. We are crushed.

He is scheduled for a hip revision surgery on Dec. 14 and I am terrified. We have had such a hard two years - painful, disappointing, demoralizing.

What do I need to know about this surgery to ease my mind, prepare to be helpful in recovery, etc???

Help!! One scared wife.

How did the liner revision go? How long did you have to stay at hospital?

pinkpam made the post about a hip liner lasting 29 years.

Stryker now uses a material called Tritanium (I think that word is their copywriter). The implant, in this case the liner that sits in the pelvis and is cup shaped, is 3D printed. The very outer layers are porous metal that allows the bone to bond with the plant. Note this only works with healthy bone. If a patient had osteoporosis then cement is used to attach the new cup to the pelvis.

Exactly what I am going through, I am 64 and have been dealing with this for 3 1/2 years. I had my other hip replaced last February and it is doing great. The second doctor told me the shaft he used was two sizes larger than the one the first doctor used. After 8 months it is almost completely attached to the bone, the first hip has zero percent attachment in the upper half of the shaft, very loose and a lot of pain. I am trying to get to 65 and onto Medicare and Social Security before I have it replaced. It is clearly malpractice, but almost impossible to prove as no doctor will testify.
