Hi Ginger,
Cheryl here (CKD stage 4, not on dialysis yet, approved & accepted for kidney transplant, sort of looking for a living kidney donor.) Just want to check that what I think I know about Protein is correct.
1).Protein is hard on kidneys; some kinds worse than others (red meat) A renal dietician can help customize a diet to get the correct type and amount of protein needed for kidney patients who need to limit protein.
2). Dialysis can deplete protein so if and when that becomes necessary, protein may need to increase. Again a renal dietician can help with the details of types and quantities of protein that need to be consumed.
Am I on the right track?

@cehunt Hi Cheryl!
1.) Yes, there are several types of protein. Red meat does not sit well with me, so I do limit that dramatically. I go for chicken, turkey or fish, also hummus or some nut butters. For my protein powder, I use plant based, usually pea protein, not whey based. That has to do with limiting calcium in a renal friendly diet. Using almond milk rather than cow milk.

2.) Before dialysis, a renal patient is often counseled to limit protein intake. Then, dialysis tends to deplete amino acids. From the National Kidney Foiundation: https://www.kidney.org/kidney-topics/ckd-diet-how-much-protein-right-amount#:~:text=of%20kidney%20function.-,On%20Dialysis%3A%20Increase%20Protein,diet%20is%20no%20longer%20needed.

Yep, you're on the right track! It is a challenge for me each month as my albumin levels are tested.
