Colonoscopy Accuracy Question

Posted by habs1969 @habs1969, Jan 4 7:50am

Hi All

Had a colonoscopy done back in March 2027 which came back clear for cancer but haemorrhoids were detected and subsequently operated on.
However my bleeding still persists and I’ve lost weight recently with occasional stomach cramps and change in bowel habits.
My GP says it’s the haemorrhoids and possible IBS, and will not investigate further because of the clear colonoscopy.
I’m worried the colonoscopy might have missed cancer.
Has anybody on here ever had any such an experience please?
Thanks
Gabe

Just remember to drink lots of water throughout the day though!

I will explore the husks. I do drink lots of water. I’ve tried many remedies for it to no avail, including, Metamucil (psyllium husks) Miralax, prunes, pears, squash, etc. My constipation usually laughs at foods that would put most people in the toilet all day. Lol. Miralax and Metamucil do work, it’s just not a normal BM. Better than not going at all, but not normal.

I appreciate your suggestions though. I’m exploring it as potentially to be related to anxiety. Idk. I’m willing to consider anything, Good luck with getting the procedure you want.

I have colonoscopies every 12 months. I had a clear one in January 2018. My next one I delayed by a few months due to family wedding. In April 2019, my colonoscopy revealed a partially obstructing tumor in my sigmoid. It was cancer.
I had lost weight, was so tired, had back and stomach pain (I have ulcerative colitis so stomach pain isn’t unusual)
If your instinct says otherwise, ask for another colonoscopy or a ct

I am really sorry to hear about your diagnosis, can’t imagine what you must be going through. I really hope and pray it’s been caught early enough to be treated successfully? Please do let me know how you get on.
Thank you for sharing this with me, it has definitely helped me realise things can change year to year and not to always listen to “experts” who say once you’ve had a clear colonoscopy all is fine and you don’t need another one for a significant period of time!

Anxiety definitely does have a major role to play in stomach complaints (I know!) so it might be worth exploring ways to overcome this, though I know it’s not an easy road trying to recalibrate a way of life one has always lived and thought.

The great news is, I have been cancer free since the surgery, so five and a half years. I still continue to get annual or bi annual colonoscopy.

Wow goes to show that it’s worth having such check ups to catch this evil of a illness early. I’m so happy for you ❤️🙏

Hello,

I'm scheduled to have an initial appointment with The Mayo Clinic for my colon cancer - just discovered last week. I'm trying to decide if I stay with my current hospital or wait approximately, two more weeks to visit the Mayo Clinic. Time is most important; however, I understand quality of care is a strong factor too. I unfortunately don't know if waiting 2 additional weeks in the grand scheme of things is critical or not. Any suggestions?

@loveall1, that's a tough one to answer. Colon cancer grows slowly. Speaking generally, without knowing the specifics of your diagnosis, it is unlikely that the cancer will change in 2 weeks.

Having said that, I know that waiting is really hard. Once you hear the words "you've got cancer", you just want to get moving and get rid of it.

Do you know anything more about the stage of your cancer? How was it discovered?

I'm told it may be stage 2-3 as it shows potential metastization to near by lymph nodes. It was discovered by CT with contrast but confirmed with biopsy and blood work. Additionally, I had a PET CT with F-18 injection which also confirmed colon cancer tumor in my hepatic flexure of my colon - approximately 1.77 inches.

Thanks for your feedback,
