What are your experiences with tramadol ?

Posted by Always Hopeful @AlwaysHopeful, Jun 16, 2024

I have been taking tramadol for over 20 years. It was first prescribed for knee pain. This was the era when they did meniscus surgery. I'm sure the medication is not effective for me now, but it continues to be prescribed. Any other thoughts or experiences?

Tramadol was no better than tylenol for me.

It can be helpful to review your medications with your doctor and/or pharmacist. Here's a related discussion:

I was told by my [then] doctor that Tramadol is NOT an opioid; that it was created to use in PLACE of opioids. A few years later, it was added to the list of controlled substances. Personally, I feel it is just another way of controlling what we can have. As we all know, we cannot get real pain prescriptions any more. I've probably said enough. Mine was prescribed for severe back pain, but does not help with real pain at all, but I discovered that it did relieve my fibromyalgia aches! So, I take it just for that. When I did not take it for a while, there were no symptoms of withdrawal at all.

I take 150-200 mg of tramadol daily for referred pain from cervical and lumbar stenosis, and myofascial pain. I get breakthrough pain often, and use about 12 tablets of OxyContin per 1-2 months.

I had the same experience with being told it was not an opioid and years later finding it on the list of controlled substances.

I tried taking 100mg a while back, and I guess it was too much for my system; got fuzzy headed and more tired. [I am 81, and weigh 94 pounds] And it didn't seem to help the pain either.

Was told to stop after it caused gastroparesis and after weaning off ended up with restless legs. I was on it for 10 yrs being told it was safe.

I use to take tramadol for back pain - when the pain first started. I would take before going to bed, and woke up feeling pretty good. I did this for a couple years, around 2010, Then had a major back surgery- didn't take for a long time. The next time I took it, I had dry heaves, cold sweats etc. Then didn't take for a long time - scared of it. A new dr. tried to give it to me while I waited for the implant for my back, just to take when I needed something- I lived 10 miles away and I would have had to come in when called so they could count the pills, and occasionally have a pee test - I think. I'm 70 and said I wouldn't do that - drive back and forth, so they could count my pills???? I turned it down, and now have the implant- at least 60% less pain!! Yup - my back is a mess.
