Any Tips For Radiation Patients Who Suffer Constipation?

Posted by mark1952 @mark1952, 4 days ago

I am 73 and have had chronic constipation for a few years now. The Orgovyx I have been on for three months has made my constipation worse. I have had SpaceOAR gel for almost a month. This has made the constipation worse. I have had four radiation sessions and the constipation seems worse than ever. I am taking four Senna pills and one Colace pill twice a day. I supplement this regimen with Dulcolax and MiraLax every 2-3 days. If I could pass gas, I could deal with the slow stool. Unfortunately, the backed up stool traps the gas resulting in horribly painful bloating and gas back-up into my stomach where it causes pain around my diaphragm, just below the Xiphoid Process. I am barely managing with the laxatives, walking, rebounding, yoga, heavy water consumption, light food consumption, light massage. Any tips would be appreciated. To others with constipation, give careful consideration to how you are going to manage your situation. Perhaps your gastroenterologist can be helpful. Mine was not. Best of luck to everyone in their cancer journey.

@heavyphil And watch that Senna - it WILL cause gas and bloating

Been taking 3 senna twice a day for a few years. Never had a problem with gas or bloating. Is something else I am taking alleviating that?

Probably not a frequent Side effect .

Jeff, way back when you first started taking it, you might have had gas and not even noticed it enough to raise suspicion. Like most things that stimulate the GI tract, continued use alleviates a lot of the side effects.
I think because it was the very first time I had ever taken it, my nerve endings went “Whoa!”…just my guess.

I take 3 senna and 2 colace twice a day because of the drugs. Once in a while I use miralax, but not very often. I don’t have a problem with gas however. I have had surgery and radiation.

My husband had the same. Radiation and surgery. He developed crohns most likely from radiation. And pain meds Ocxy, hydromorohone, fentynal patches, etc contributed to this. He started taking Miralax 2x day. Then progressed to senna and a stool softener. Always have suppositories in hand. And eventually palliative care prescribed lachulose which he took only needed and In worked pretty quickly. For gas pains or constipation pain, try put aloe juice. It worked instantly for my husband. He would literally be in toilet yelling in pain. And pure aloe relieves it instantly.

Hi had radiation treatments for my prostate 26 and now dealing with side effects on my return to normal specifically hot flash sweating . Is this because of my Lupron hormone 3 month shot has ended and my testosterone is making a comeback?

Any one out there on Flowmax after radiation treatments experience “short sweatings” and know what it’s an indication of .
Curious also of folks 3 to 4 weeks after radiation treatments have ended and their experiences.

I'm about 5 weeks post radiation. The bowel issues are pretty much resolved. Urinary side effects have improved. Less frequency. Some urgency. Some nights I get up every hour or two to pee, some nights not at all. I take that as gradual improvement. Still have hot flashes, but that I attribute to Orgovyx, not Flomax. What are your symptoms?
