Possibility of infections through fragile skin?
I am 68 years old and in good health. However, I have fragile skin on my hand and arms that bruises and tears easily. I am scheduled for a TKR, but I am concerned that this skin condition could be a conduit for infections to my knee implant for the rest of my life. Thank you.

@zadiezoey That's a very interesting question 🤔 I think many of us fall into that same group, if not when we first have the joint replacement, then as we age.
I don't know the answer in terms of research, but I can tell you my experience - I have several implants.
Over the past 10 years, I have had a systemic infection that started in my lungs that did not affect my joints. And this year I got "colonized" by a staph bacteria (not MRSA) resulting in 3 serious skin infections that required courses of oral antibiotics.
My joints were never affected, and actually had shoulder surgery this fall, after they did a nasal swab to be sure there was not active infection.
If you are concerned, tell your primary provider and your ortho surgeon. If they believe you would be at risk, maybe ask for a consult with an Infectious Disease specialist.
Of course any break down of natural defenses, like skin, can be a portal of entry for infection. Your best option is to maximize your defenses. Keep your skin well moisturized and protected from injury by wearing gloves (rubber gloves for housework, cotton gloves after moisturizing at night and after bathing). Don’t worry about bruising as much. Maximize your immune health by eating healthy foods and getting plenty of vitamins and sunshine.
Know that a healthy body fights off infection every day without even bothering you about it. Your job is to make its job easier.
Thank you for your replies. Sue, I wish you the best on your journey to full recovery. When considering the risk/reward factor, I am leaning towards not having TKR as infection complications can be so brutal.
I'm curious as to whether you have addressed this concern with your doctors, and if so, what is their counsel? I personally would not forego the benefits of a healthy joint over fear if they feel the risks are small.
