Can a dry orgasm after prostatectomy still be pleasurable?

Posted by buffalo1 @buffalo1, Dec 30, 2024

Hi all,
I had my prostate removed and was told that my orgasm would be dry due to the removal of the seminal vesicles. Is it still pleasurable to have sex without that feeling of fullness when you are about to orgasm?

Yes, it can be very pleasurable. The first few times may not be so intense but it gets better.

Your biggest problem may be that you can’t get an erection. Did you have nerve sparing surgery?

After surgery it’s almost always difficult to get an erection. They have penis pumps to help you get an erection, They have shots like bimix and Trimix that can work, And some doctors start people on Cialis or Viagra Soon after their surgery. You do not want to wait very long before you start doing things to assisted with getting an erection.

How long is too long to get the nerves going again?
Do you recommend any particular type or model or device?
I know nothing about them except Austin Power's Swedish-made penis enlarger.

You don’t want to wait nine months or a year. It really doesn’t take long to get over that surgery, you will be ready to think about it in a month or so. If you are on ADT, however, you may not have a desire to do anything. Doesn’t mean you can’t try, it can still work to climax even if you can’t get an erection.

It’s been 11 years since I’ve seen a device. The one I had worked, but wasn’t too great. Check with your insurance they may cover one.

There was a discussion about devices in here a couple of days ago. Somebody may have saved that information or may come in and supply it.

I did not have my prostate removed. I had 30 rounds of proton radiation. But I did and do suffer from dry orgasms.

I don't remember being told it could happen, so I checked with my R/O. I can do this via their portal. R/O stated yes since treated all of prostate radiation can damage the seminal vessels and thus dry orgasms.

Now the question of can you enjoy orgasms, YES. But I speak for me. It was a very different feeling and the thrush of no ejaculation was at first shocking. But it was very pleasureable. I am hoping the seminal vessels improve like the prostate did from radiation damage but if it dose not I had to sign a form that I would not try to have children after my treatments. I am 77 so that was not a problem.

Just know we are all different and what one will experience may not be what you experience. I don't have the experience of having my prostate removed so just can comment on my experience with radiation.
Good luck!

Research "penile rehabilitation after prostate cancer surgery". I found this site particularly helpful: https://melissahadleybarrett.com/penile-rehabilitation-program/

Yes, it is. Different, but definitely pleasurable. And it's a bit of a compensation not having the mess any more.

I had NS RARP surgery 6 months ago. Yes, the dry orgasm can be very pleasurable although it might take a little getting used to. Initially I had a little pain shortly after having an orgasm (similar to a lightly strained muscle or something), but that pain gradually went away after a month or so and I guess most guys don't feel any discomfort at all. I read the following document from UCSF (a cancer center of excellence) and it has a nice section on sexual function recovery after prostate cancer surgery: https://urology.ucsf.edu/sites/urology.ucsf.edu/files/uploaded-files/attachments/sduro0095_managing_erectile_dysfunction-a_patient_guide_.pdf
I asked my provider about penile rehab and she put me on a low dose generic Cialis. It seems to help me, but that's just my opinion and I'm not a medical professional. You should definitely ask your provider about what they recommend for penile rehab. And as Jeffmarc said above, don't wait too long to ask. Strangely enough, I had to ask about penile rehab rather than it just being an automatic part of the post-surgery discussion. But when I brought up the topic the doctor was immediately very supportive. So don't hesitate to ask about it.

Short answer, yes...

I am one of the fortunate ones, nerve sparing surgery in March 2014. It took 12 -18 months to regain a usable erection with the assistance of a daily Cialis, 5mg and "exercise." SRT did not fry the nerves either.

I will venture that other than the stimulation, physical and mental, required to achieve an erection and orgasm, they are just as intense and delightful now as they were prior to my surgery, accounting for age of course.

I "learned" that even in the absence of an erection I could achieve an orgasm.

The University of California San Francisco has a decent penile rehabilitation therapy program - https://urology.ucsf.edu/patient-care/adult-non-cancer/male-sexual-and-reproductive-health/erectile-dysfunction
