Microinvasive breast cancer and positive senitel lympyh node

Posted by jusme @jusme, Jul 6, 2018

I had bilateral mastectomy and removal of sentinal nodes due to dcis insitu however when pathology report came in they found another type of cancer ...microinvasive breast cancer with one of two sentinel nodes positive. Has anyone else had this diagnoses ? There's not much available on it. I have went for the body scan to assure it has not spread . Still anxiously awaiting results .

I was diagnosed 12/18/23, age 56, with DCIS and that was after a few mammograms, ultrasound, and biopsy. After the biopsy confirmed DCIS, 2mm, my oncologist ordered a contrasting MRI. After this MRI Radiology called and said they needed to do another biopsy. I refused because the first biopsy I was not completely numb and it was a traumatic experience. I had already decided at this point I was having a bi-lateral mastectomy, and no one would tell me why they wanted another biopsy. After research about lumpectomies and radiation I uncovered that sometimes heart valves can be fried when radiating the left breast, resulting in open heart surgery. That was a hard pass for me and why I opted for the mastectomy route. Once pathology came in there was a second tumor diagnosed as tubular cancer and that tumor was 11mm, also in the left breast, and the DCIS had left the capsule. Luckily there was no invasion into my lymph nodes. LUCKY. I had originally scheduled the mastectomy 3/14/24 but had a flare up of diverticulitis and had to put off the surgery to 4/8/24. From Thanksgiving 2023 until my surgery my left knee joint was swelling off and on, and so painful I could not walk and was in bed more often than not. I had previous surgery on this knee when I was 14, old gymnastics injury. I read where cancer cells that die settle in previously injured areas in the body. I was on crutches for 4 months and actually crutched into surgery. I walked out of the hopital after my surgery the next morning and have not needed crutches since. I was not diagnosed with yours but had two different kinds of cancer in my breast and had never heard of such a thing. I am praying for you, and hope the answers come soon. Please take care and stay strong.

I had two types of breast cancer according to my surgical pathology report. IDC and DCIS with microinvasion. I believe this is pretty common as I think the IDC comes from the DCIS. The tumor itself was very small, only 20 mm, which is slightly less than an inch. I had a lumpectomy and radiation, but refused chemo because no lymph nodes involved. My surgeon says I've had a charmed recovery, so I feel very blessed.

My diagnosis is very similar
DCIS with IDC and no lymph node involvement
How are you doing now ?

The medical oncologist was unable to determine the receptor type of the microinvasive cancer therefore he is assuming it's the same type of cancer as dcis since it was in its background . Radiation oncologist is sending me to Vanderbilt for a 2nd opinion on radiation. He doesn't think I need it but I'm uncomfortable with that. So Monday i see 2 radiation oncologist at Vanderbilt and hope I have some answers and a treatment plan by midweek.

Hi, I recently got diagnosed with DCIS-MI like yourself. The microinvasive bit is ER+, but PR and HER status unknown. I also have a 15 mm DCIS. My radiologist thinks anyone with DCIS and with MI should be radiated. Would you mind sharing the outcome of your treatment plan? Thank you

@sara3333, have you decided to go ahead with radiation? Would a second opinion help?
