Forteo side effects

Posted by ninglike @ninglike, Dec 18, 2024

I was going to start Forteo next month but just saw the following discussion:https://www.inspire.com/groups/bone-health-and-osteoporosis/discussion/forteo-side-effects-urgent/?lid=knr77xgdlylk&utm_campaign=Activity%20Summary%20Email_Daily%20Send&utm_source=email&inspire-id=J3VQXPM9
I'm scared and start wondering if I should start Forteo, your advice is very much appreciated!
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
Best regards
Ning

I just had my first CTX p1np test results after 4 months of Forteo. my Baseline after coming off of Fosamax was nearly (10 to 1 ratio) CTX 99 p1np 19 May 2024
Dec 2024 CTX 540 P1np 129.3 ( big jump)
My lab has p1np "High,Above range"
Dr.said don't worry meds are working. I don't have much confidence in the Dr So could someone tell me if these numbers really are ok please? (The Ratio is 4.5) these ok?
Just little worried. Not sure I am in competent hands. I had to ask for these test.(after reading Mccormick bk)
Thank you.

Ning,
I was scared before I started Forteo 14 months ago too. I took me 3 compression fractures to give in to taking the drug. The shots are not that bad. I do mine at night before bed and I let the pen warm up for about 10 minutes otherwise it stings a bit. Others do it in the morning. I had fatigue and some weight gain (mostly in the abdomen).
The good news is I just had a DEXA and my bone density increased 22%! I went from -3.5 to -1.9 in my spine. I am glad now that I did it.

@reldo your p1np jump at 4mo Forteo after fosamax is great, which is an indication of Forteo's anabolic effect. If you look at the angle in terms of ratio, that's a huge improvement. P1np may continue to trend up. How long you have had fosamax? Did you take a holiday prior to the initiation of Forteo?

I was on Fosamax 9 to 10 months. Off 3 to 4 months before starting Forteo.

I am also on Forteo, for a second time now. Can I ask what you are taking for continued care after Forteo? I am already worried about that.

Hi @reldo thank you for your reply. One more question when you get a chance, was your btm reading ctx99/p1np19 done before drug holiday or after? Thank you.

Happy Holidays!

I had stopped Fosamax around March,Beg April.
Then I got my blood test mid. (Ctx99,P1np 19) May. It Took nearly 3 more months to get my Forteo approved by insurance. So I started Forteo in August.
I wish I had insisted on getting a baseline before starting Fosamax to see what my Real normal Ctx and P1np were. What a learning journey. I feel so blessed to have found this group.
Best regards

I am worried about that too. I have about 18 months to go. From what I know now, without further Investigation I will probably go back on Fosamax, only because it is a old drug, it has been around a long time. And I did ok on it with tolerable side effects. I may schedule another phone consult with Mccormick just to get his input. He told me Fosamax and drugs like it could stay in the body for up to 10 years or so. If I understood him correctly. He also said i may only need to be on it for the first year off of Forteo to hold my gains. He thought for my case diet and exercise
could keep me stable. I know i will get a dexa scan every 6 months to a year afterwards. It is well worth paying $85 for peace of mind just to make sure I don't rapidly lose bone. I am just not comfortable waiting the 2 years.
So nice to have this group to share and learn from. Helps knowing your not going through it alone. Hope this helps.
God Bless

Thank you. If it worked for you before, than you would likely be comfortable taking it again. I had esophagus spasm with bisphosphonates the first time around, even though I took it correctly . It was suggested IV would be better and by pass the stomach. However if my body did not like it the first time around (I had taken it about a week), I was not keen to try it again. I'm thinking to go back on Raloxifene after I do 6 months of Forteo and then a year of Evenity.
Evenity is an unknown to me, but from what I have read, it works a bit different than Forteo and builds bone as well. Seems we are all having to do our own research as endocrinologist are hard to get in to see, and then annoyed if we second guess their advice.

If you can get Kieth Mccormick's book "Great Bones" He has a complete chapter on Drugs. Pros, cons , side effects, follow up drugs to prevent bone loss as well as which to avoid if you have certain Health issues. Pg557-560
Evenity :
(Romosozumb) He has 4 pages on it. It sounds good, except scary possible side effects. But he states after the one year treatment you must still use a bisphosphonate to hold gains.
Thank you for sharing . I have started a list of follow up drugs, and question to get answered before I am done with Forteo.
God Bless
