Reclast jaw pain

Posted by trishw99 @trishw99, Aug 6, 2023

I had first Reclast infusion May 2023.
Last week or two I had increased tooth sensitivity, and started using Sensodine.
Yesterday I started jaw pain and today it is swollen and sore.
I called Endo who prescribed, and waiting for a call back.
Has anyone else had this happen???
Thank you!

@trishw99, @haroula, and all...I had my first of 3 annual Reclast infusions in early July 2023. I had a very serious week of reaction to the infusion, nothing allergic, but severe full-body pain and such. Since, I've had no other symptoms of anything unusual. The Endocrinologist told me it is common to have teeth, gums, and jaw issues so it is important to keep my tooth and mouth care at the best level possible. Also, do not have any invasive tooth, mouth, or jaw treatments or surgery until after the 3-year Reclast infusions.

I'm glad you seem to have missed the bullet, but we do need to stay on top of this reaction and our mouth care.

Blessings, Elizabeth

This is long after your posting but if you see this do you know how long to wait after Reclast to have a tooth extraction? I have a failed root canal and it needs to come out. I had one Reclast infusion 24 months ago. Terrified of jaw issues!

I do not know how long to wait for extraction after reclast.

It has been a year and a half sense reclast and I no longer have tooth and jaw pain

Sending good thoughts to you!

What jaw symptoms of trouble after RECLAST infusion

REPLY

For those just now (2025) reading the original post, I had a single Reclast infusion in April 2024. In March 2025 I had a bad fall where I landed on the under side of my chin, breaking both sides of my jaw in multiple pieces and cracking two caps. The oral maxillofacial surgeon chose "closed" surgery (wiring my jaw shut for 6 weeks) rather than "open" surgery (using plates and screws) because he was concerned about ONJ if they used screws,

Afterwards he said to wait 3 to 4 months before doing dental work like caps or fillings to give me time to work on opening my jaw wide enough + allow the bone to heal further. When I discovered the root on one of the teeth was cracked and the tooth required extraction, he said to wait at least 6 months - which is about 17 months after the infusion. (I haven't yet talked to the surgeon who will extract the tooth.)

I’m a moderately active 80 year old. My dr.recently prescribed Reclast for my osteoporosis. Have not made
the appointment for treatment yet. Seriously having second thoughts after reading members posts about side effects.
I have arthritis in my hips, and lower back. . Also found out this week I have some bone loss in my upper front jaw where my implants are.

I had an infusion of Reclast (my first) in May with a terrible set of side effects for a couple weeks— now it’s mid-July, and I’ve got what appears to be TMJ, intermittent pain at the joint where my jaw opens. Haven’t had it diagnosed yet, but I’m worried about jaw bone loss, as that is also a side effect of Prolia, which I was on for ten years. I don’t know if that is a side effect of Reclast.

I was prescribed reclast after 10 years of Prolia. No side effects with Prolia. I had a first reclast infusion a few months ago. I hydrated as directed before and after.
The next morning, just after waking, I passed out twice. I messaged the doc on the portal, and the response was to go to my PCP or a neurologist as this isn’t a recognized side effect. I call BS because several other women reported this on a closed Facebook group (yes, I’m cautious about reading FB posts). Hasn’t happened since. I’m going to go to a neurologist for bloodwork that seems to be important. And now I know that because I have osteopenia, taking these drugs isn’t necessarily recommended. I don’t know if that was the case 10 years ago. The rebound effect of not switching to another drug after Prolia is frightening.

@jowens734 correction: I’m going to an endocrinologist, not a neurologist.

@Reclast is my first prescribed medication for my issue. When I schedule it depends on my dental surgeon and dentist. They both told me to hold off at this time.
