Osteoporosis and lower back pain
Hi everyone and thank you for taking time to read my post. I am 58 and healthy- retired teacher and now teach 3 days Reading Intervention. Here is my issue- I have severe osteoporosis and, to be honest, I’m scared. My hips are mild to moderate but my spine is in the range 3.2 to 3.4. I love my doctor and trust him completely. His plan is to start Evenity then Prolia. Can someone share experience with pain? My lower back hurts off and on all day but worse in the mornings. Thank you all so much.

Hello. I have osteoporosis and a variety of spine issues. Are you saying that you believe the back pain is directly related to your back pain or do you have additional issues with your spine?
I believe the lower back pain is directly related to the osteoporosis. I don’t have any other issues with my spine- thank you for your reply.
@kdickerson I have always been told that osteoporosis does not cause pain- until we fracture. Have you had an x-ray to see if you have any hidden fractures? If not your back pain may have another cause. Have you been to PT? Had any imaging?
Evenity works quickly. My friend went from -4 something to borderline in a year.
When you finish, you might want to research Prolia vs Reclast as a follow-up. You are young so you will have to, at some point, transition to Reclast from Prolia and that can be very tricky.
Many of us benefit from Keith McCormick's book "Great Bones" which explains Prolia rebound, which is a scary problem that happens when stopping. One year might be helpful then Reclast, according to McCormick's latest opinions. I also watch Dr. Ben Leder on YouTube for info! But your own doctor is probably the best resource!

Hi,
I am 83 and have had osteoporosis for many years, I do not take any drugs…my choice. For me, exercise is the only way to prevent lower back pain. There are specific exercises that will help. Aside from daily walking, I have 3 active senior gym classes daily. We learned how to stretch and how to stretch our hamstrings. I stretch my hamstrings in the morning (using my kitchen table)..each leg a minimum of 40 seconds and also at night…sometimes during the day. We are all too sedentary and sit too much . I find myself doing short spurts of stretching and mini exercise routines throughout the day. If there are no senior gym classes available to you, try to find some online stretching routines and do them religiously. It will make a world of difference in how you feel.
Also, check your diet and try to eliminate any inflammatory foods you may be eating. Adopt this approach of exercise and diet and you will see your mental and physical self improve so much you won’t recognize yourself. Doctors seem to go straight to drugs as a solution. Obviously, in my case , I don’t agree.
Good luck

I have back pain as a result of a compression fracture at T8 that impacted my back muscles, weakening them and causing them to tighten and spasm.
I did three months of physiotherapy to address this and continue to do back exercises every day.
I found the book, “Back Mechanic”, by Dr. Stuart McGill to be very helpful in addressing my back pain.
I think it probably depends on what is creating your lower back pain. I have been on Evenity for 10 months. The pain I experienced from weak bones is gone. I still have osteoarthritis flare ups in my lower back. Evenity does not get rid of osteoarthritis or sciatica.
What are inflammatory foods?
I know it is not good to eat too much sugar.
I have "Bursitis" & think it must be connected in
some way with diet.
I am 80+ and always feel better with exercise but do
take Calcium & Alendronate ( prescription). Kay

Some examples of inflammatory foods are generally processed foods, red meat and wheat of any kind like white or even whole grain breads and pasta or noodles made with wheat.
I try to eat as much non gluten as I can. The wheat eaten today is genetically modified and not the wheat my generation grew up on. I don’t eat much red meat, mostly fish and chicken and ground chuck and I do like calves liver. I am not a 100% gluten free because I enjoy good food and love good pizza and cheesecake on occasion. My sweet addiction is one piece of dark chocolate at night while finishing my one glass of wine that I had with dinner.
My favorite fish is salmon, sardines and baramundi and I happen to love sushi and octopus.
I think an inflammatory diet makes you less energetic and kind of bloated and can cause aches and pains and definitely contributes to high blood pressure and obesity and maybe depression.
I know I feel pretty much energized and have no aches or pains and am in very good health with no medications.
I’m sure my good genes come into play.
And that’s the way I roll without depriving myself of anything.
Happy New You New Year
