Should I wait for follow up in one year for diagnosed birads 3 calcifications ?

mollyandme. What did tour medical team tell you. If there are suspicions, they usually call for other tests. I had suspicions, so i had more tests.

Here’s some questions I’d ask before that decision is made.
Was the diagnosis made from a 2D mammogram or 3D tomosynthesis mammogram? Because they can make a better determination using 3D.
Was an ultrasound done?
Were the calcifications clustered or in a line (I can’t remember which one is more likely to be cancerous).
Does the location of the calcifications have any implications? There are some areas of the breast where cancer is found more often.
Was there any other unusual finding along with the calcifications?
Is there family history of breast cancer? Or BRCA?

If they did a thorough job during the diagnostic process then waiting may be the right thing to do. I can only share what happened to me, maybe that would be helpful.

I was diagnosed with a Birads 3 but I had very very few calcifications. They found an unusual shaped distortion that they thought looked like a folded lymph node. The location was in the lower outer quadrant where they would expect lymph nodes to be. This was based on a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. They told me to come back in 6 months.
My walking buddy friend told me that if I was going to worry about it every day (guess I talked about it a lot) it would probably be good to go ahead and ask more questions. My regular doctor said she thought I might want to talk to a breast specialist. This triggered an ultrasound guided core needle biopsy which revealed an intermediate grade DCIS.

I like what ruby slippers said. Ask more questions. If you have a portal that is used, put the questions in there.
For me, I had breast cancer and a genetic test with 2 mutations. My sister chose not to be tested. Two years later she had ovarian cancer. Who a test prevented the advance of the cancer? It is worth asking with familial history what you might do for prevention.

I think it depends on your personal cancer risk and your risk tolerance - if you're comfortable with wait and see and your medical team is, thats fine. If you're worried b/c of your personal and/or family cancer risk, then you can request a biopsy.

The thing that concerns me is ….the cluster of the calcifications in only the left breast they are clustered and there is a history of ovarian cancer ,also the calcifications are in my upper lateral quadrant..all of that seems to me that my risk is a lot higher..I believe if not a biopsy then another 6 month follow up would be fine …they want me to come back in one year

Just take it easy then. No worries. Unless in self-checks anything feels or looks odd or you want a biopsy now. It is always your choice.
