Support Group for Those of Us Living With Mild Dementia

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, Sep 18, 2023

I know there is a Dementia Caregiver Support Group.

I would like to have a group for people like me. I am entering the Mild Dementia phase from Mild Cognitive Impairment.
It’s frightening to think about my future.

Could a group for Dementia Patients be started?

New Topic, do you feel upset when others say, “you don’t LOOK like you have dementia, you don’t SOUND like you have dementia, I forget my keys too…

I get defensive, and offended when someone challenges my disease.

This morning I was on a ZOOM meeting with the people from DAA. (Dementia Action Alliance) DAAnow.org
They suggested a few ways I can handle those remarks that upset me.

“Do you hold your keys in your hand, and you don’t know what to do with them”.

“Do you walk into your own kitchen and not know what room you are in”.

They just don’t get it. They want to make you feel better.

I guess you have to say well. The test show that I have it. Not much you can do about it.

I give you a hug for admitting you have mild dementia. Most people are in denial and make lots of excuses as to Why they can’t remember “what am i supposed to do with these keys in my hand”? Would be a scary moment.

I have noticed I’m having more trouble with my memory than most people my age (71). And some friends in their 80’s. My mom died from Alzheimer’s and her dad as well. I notice I am having some behaviours as my mom in her early stages. And my ability to find words when I’m talking is getting worse. I had a CT scan a few years back and they told me there were areas that were more common in people in their 90’s. They said I should follow up in a year. That was when I was 68. My G P says I don’t need a scan and besides, it would take over a year to get one. I’m not sure what to do. I’m really scared.
