Tramadol Helps with Exhaustion

Posted by keeptrying @keeptrying, Dec 6, 2017

Besides the constant pain, the exhaustion of trying to carry around 2 dead, numb legs (I call logs) exhausts me until I can do nothing. My neurologist prescribed a minimal dose of Tramadol for pain, but it is wonderfully effective at giving me some ENERGY so I can just do simple basic tasks. Anyone else either have this extreme fatigue or a Tramadol experience?

I am a 76 year old woman who has been feeling very fatigued since my arthritis pain has gotten worse about 6 months ago. I also have a herniated lumbar disc which causes pain and numbness down my left leg into my feet. My legs feel heavy and tired. I read that pain can cause exhaustion. When I take a 50 mg Tramadol, the pain vanishes and I feel more energetic. I take it a couple of times of week when I have yard work or house work to do. With the Tramadol, I can work for 3 hours without pain or fatigue. Without Tramadol, I would be sitting inside working a jigsaw puzzle.

You are lucky - I finally tried Tramadol for on going pain ( back , RA, leg atrophies etc) Did nothing! I was actually relieved as I am already ‘addicted’ to prednisone (5 mg normally) and didn’t care for another addition.

Yes! I often feel like my legs are logs - don’t know why - there are so many possibles. I have muscle atrophy due to RA ( glutes and other) and 30+years of prednisone. Tramadol didn’t help ant all - but I was anfraid of it too. And it isn’t every day that the logs happen, but walking is always hard.- but makes me a big fall risk. And yes exhausting! But pain is exhausting - even to keep a smile on your face.
But do.

What do you call a low dosage of tramadal?

Coming from an addict in recovery, there is a definite difference between addiction and dependence. Please look up "drug dependence versus drug addiction" if you are not familiar. If a side effect of tramadol is increased energy, and you are taking the medication as prescribed, consider yourself fortunate. If you find yourself taking two, three, or more when one is prescribed to meet the goal of increased energy, please beware!

I am the same way. I try not to take mint til noon. If I don't take it by then I get exhausted. I'll lay down for short nap and then I get some energy. If u forget to take it I can't hardly walk as no energy.

Hello @keeptrying , welcome to the Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with an issue that causes a lot of constant pain and exhaustion. I find your reaction to Tramadol very informative and I appreciate @johnbishop connecting us so that I can share my experience using it with you.

I use Tramadol for moderate to severe joint pain. I am prescribed 50 mg 3 times daily but usually only take 50 mg to get me through my work day. I do not consider Tramadol a very effective pain medication but it does help and it's effects are unique. I take the 50 mg and about an hour later I feel a twinge of mild nausea that last maybe 30 minutes, I know the medication is kicking in when this occurs. I then feel unusually optimistic for about an hour, maybe two then it begins to taper off. By optimistic I mean that I want to become active, I begin to look forward to doing things at work and begin mentally planning after work projects. I had not thought of this as a boost in energy but more of an antidepressant effect. This reaction lasts for about 4 hours or slightly longer. I did ask my G.P. about this and got a funny look along with "Hmmmm".
I would add that I cannot sleep if I take Tramadol before bed. 4 hours before yes, but any sooner I will not sleep until the effects wear off. I am more alert driving and it never makes me drowsy and no euphoria.
I have read that Tramadol is closely related to some antidepressant medications and can have an antidepressant effect.
Maybe more than you needed to hear but it does have a unique effect.

@keeptrying do you find it difficult to sleep if you take it near your bedtime?

I have restless legs and sometimes have to take a second ultram at night. My first is usually around noon. It helps the restless legs do I can sleep. Only thing is sometimes I itch all over but only at night. The one at noon doesn't do this. So weird.

I have mixed connective tissue Disease (mixed autoimmune illness). Thank God for tramadol. It helps the malaise, fatigue, mood, everything).

I take at least two Tramadol a day.
Would be in pain most of the day without it!

Please beware of what? I’m 83 and Tramadol allows me to live a somewhat normal life!
