Is there a medication that helps cervical disc disease?

Posted by rambam0915 @rambam0915, Dec 17, 2024

I have been suffer from severe pain from C2-T2 disc degenerative problems. Cortisone injections do not help. Been taking 2 Aleve with 2 Tylenol and Lyrica and Flexeral for the pain. Barely does anything.
Is there any pain reliever that helps?
I am 75 yrs old. Thank you

Have they recommended cervical spine surgery to help relieve your pain? I have spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease and had ACDF surgery on C5-C6 to relieve pressure on spinal cord and nerve roots. It helped improve my daily headaches, neck and shoulder pain, etc. I had bone spurs and disc bulge that needed to be removed to relieve my symptoms. Medications only mask the symptoms and don’t treat the underlying mechanical stress on your spine.

I wish ice and heat was enough for my problem. It did help me much. A little short term relief but not a long term solution. Degeneration in cervical spine gets progressively worse over time for those with stenosis/DDD and osteoarthritis, unfortunately. Ice/heat didn’t do much for my spinal cord compression/ myelopathy caused by disc bulge and bone spurs.

I had daily headaches, neck and shoulder/shoulder blade pain/stiffness, radiculopathy causing pain/weakness/numbness in arms/hands, bladder control issues and difficulty walking. This was all caused by my C5-C6 bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, central spinal stenosis, and cervical myelopathy (spinal cord compression injury). I was 52 years old at the time and had the ACDF surgery urgently to stop the progression of the spinal cord injury and permanent damage. I was more scared not to get the surgery than having it.

I may need surgery now at C6-C7 since my arms/hands are weak and numb again and have a new herniated disc into my central spinal canal.

If you trust your surgeon and they recommend you have the surgery, you definitely want to consider it. The cervical spine surgery wasn’t as bad as my lumbar spine surgery.

Did your surgeon tell you if your spinal cord was being compressed/flattened (myelopathy)?

I have to take a tramadol and lay on a heating pad for about an hour. This gets me through the day. Have to take a break and rest even though I may want to keep on going throughout the day. Gotta do some self- care to be able to help and enjoy others! It’s hard, but much needed!
