Prostate Treatment At The World's Greatest Clinic . . .

Posted by readd @readd, 2 days ago

I had a prostatectomy at the Mayo Clinic on February 26, 2024. I came to the Mayo Clinic after seeking medical help from our local urologist for 1 year. The Mayo Clinic did a CT scan and an MRI (among other tests) and declared that I did NOT have prostate cancer. I was offered TURP surgery. When I said that I didn't think that would help (I had already had the equivalent of TURP surgery locally), I was told, "We're offering you TURP surgery, TAKE IT, OR LEAVE IT!"
I not only had TURP surgery once, but . . . TWICE at the Mayo Clinic. After the second TURP surgery (a year after I had come and TWO years after I had first sought treatment), when the pathology came back, I was told, "You DO have prostate cancer!" Not just ANY prostate cancer, but cancer so rare that according to TWO Mayo Clinic surgeons, there were only 32 reported cases in medical literature (Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the prostate).
I was NOT offered the privilege of seeing an oncologist, and . . . I was told that not only would I have to have my prostate removed, but also my bladder and to have diversionary surgery to accommodate an abdominal bag for my urine (urostomy). NO explanation was given about the need for the surgery, or what difficulties I might expect afterwards living in a remote rural area with no resident urologist.
I said, "You can remove my prostate, but . . . NOT my bladder!" The first surgeon who was assigned by the Mayo Clinic told me that he could NOT go against the findings of the Mayo Clinic Tumor Board. He reached out to a colleague, who said that HE would do it!
When the urinary catheter was removed eight days after prostatectomy, the nurse said words to the effect, "This is all very strange. Usually, I have a Gleason score and follow up recommendations. I have NONE of that, for you!"
Essentially, I have been given NO follow up. I was misdiagnosed at the outset, given TWO unnecessary TURP surgeries (which contributed to my incontinence following the prostatectomy), given no explanation for the suggested treatment (prostate AND bladder removal and urostomy), and not offered the services of an oncologist -- at the World's Greatest Clinic! When I suggested to the surgeon performing the prostatectomy that we meet to see if we could assist future sufferers of this affliction with finding a diagnosis, I was . . . IGNORED.

I’ve got to admit this treatment seems terrible. Have you gone back to them and asked to get your Gleason score and find out what’s going on? They were paid for a service and they did not provide it.

Was the colleague he reached out to, who agreed to do just the prostatectomy, a Mayo doctor, Or was this a doctor from outside of Mayo? If so, you want to contact him about the final Gleason score. You also wanna find out if there’s anything else showing up like cribriform or intraductal?

I am very sorry about your bad experience at Mayo, whichever location it was. This is not the norm, to say the least. I hope you can find a provider from Mayo who can look at your case and discuss with you what happened and fill in the missing information. You could start by contacting the patient ombudsman; not sure of the correct department name.

@readd that certainly sounds like a horrible experience. you may need to get a telehealth evaluation outside of Mayo.
