Just had my right hip removed after 2 years with replacement (twice replaced). Girdlestone procedure. Cut ~4 inches off of femur. I already wear an AFO due to foot drop after FIRST replacement, now I will also need a lift. Still in hospital. They are going in twice a week to debride and pack the femur with antifungals I also get antifungals via IV once a day. Doing inpatient PT and OT. Moving/sliding out of bed pretty good but using walker and hopping only on good leg (I can only do toe touch weight bearing on right leg until a few weeks after last debridement - so we are talking February/March). Guess my Christmas will be in July this year since I will be in hospital for Christmas. Depressed. Being forced to not being able to work at 55 yo…

Hello....I'm sorry to hear about your struggles with hip. I am 72, live in Michigan, USA and had Girdlestone of my left hip in February of 2022. As soon as that happened to me, I asked Dr in hospital to put me on Prozac 10mg (antidepressant) as I knew I would need something to help get me through this, but didn't want anything too strong and I had used Prozac many years ago with no trouble weaning off it. It does give me a better outlook on my life and if you're not on antidepressant, I suggest you consider that to help you. I get around pretty well on crutches when outside, but mostly use walker inside the home. I can take a few steps with no aid and I hold counters in kitchen to get around and prepare meals. My husband makes my shoes by glueing soles from one shoe onto another until I get a comfortable height. I'm probably 2.5 or 3 inches shorter on that leg. I am on lifelong antibiotics now. The good thing is that pain is only mild and controlled with Tylenol and Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) which I was on before all this happened for osteoarthritis in many joints. I do strengthening exercises daily and ride upright exercise bike and even have adult tricycle to ride outside. I can camp, fish on pontoon boat and drive a car ok. There is some quality of life after a Girdlestone, so keep up the good work and exercises. I'm still working towards just one crutch or cane for mobility.
