Anyone take Bone-Up calcium supplement?
I’m on a mission to change, adjust, add, anything to help my bone density improve. I’ve been taking Bone-Up for 5 years- since I’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis, but my density continues to get worse. This supplement has Vitamin C, D, K2, magnesium but the calcium is elemental and says microcrystalline hydroxyapatite. Wondering if anyone out there takes this, or knows anything about it? Maybe I should switch to normal calcium supplement like Caltrate, or something else????

I was told 1200mg of calcium and 2000units of vit D.
After looking up "bone up", you may not be taking enough of either.
Does including osteoporosis meds factor into your plan or you trying to improve without meds. Can you share your dexa scores.
Hi!! I’ve had reclast three times… the first two didn’t help at all as my bone density got worse each time. I’ve no idea why my dr had me do a third round. I recently found this site and am learning to be my own advocate and not rely totally on drs. I’m not sure about my score but I think my spine was -2.9. I fractured a bone in my spine a few years ago. I was asking about the bone up because although it says calcium, it’s not in the form that is mostly mentioned like calcium carbonate or calcium citrate. Also I’m wondering if algaeCal is better. Do you know anything about different types of calcium and their absorption?
You should be able to access your dexa scores on your patient portal.
Someone with more calcium info should answer that question. Great that you are becoming your own best health advocate! There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here.
Make sure you are asking you doc why: why are you prescribing this drug, what is the science behind this drug for my osteoporosis and what is your treatment plan and thoughts about drug sequencing.
Is this your PCP or endocrinologist. What is this person's expertise in bone health. Don't be afraid to ask for a referral. Or self refer if that is an option in your medical system. Do your own research on best docs for osteoporosis.
Looks like Bone Up contains calcium in the form of microcrystalline hydroxyapatite. I found this study that states it is similar in effectiveness to calcium citrate and calcium carbonate in suppressing bone turnover markers.
The main difference seems to be that it doesn't raise serum calcium levels (blood levels) quite as much as the other two forms of calcium.
"These findings suggest that Ca preparations, in general, produce repeated sustained increases in serum Ca concentrations after ingestion of each dose and that Ca supplements with smaller effects on serum Ca concentrations may have equivalent efficacy in suppressing bone turnover."

Hi, calcium hydroxyapatite is already converted to the form if ca. that your body turns ca. into to make bone. It is harder to absorb however. Taking it with lemon juice or vinegar in water makes it more readily available. The beneficial thing about Jarrow Bone Up is that it has ingredients that go into making bone. Calcium is only one of those components.
I take my supplements separately, since I need to be careful to not overdose on magnesium (true for all kidney patients). I consume calcium citrate infused orange juice daily. 8/10 cup equals the same amount of calcium as in 1 cup of cow's milk, and is absorbed better than milk because of the acidity. Your suggestion about increasing supplement absorption with lemon juice or vinegar rings true.
Thank you. I am taking control of this… and actually excited because it seems there are things I can do… this site has really helped me. Starting with a new doctor in January.
I also fractured a bone in my spine (L4). Do you exercise and, if so, what type and also do you limit certain movements because of your healed vertebra feature? I no longer bend forward or pick up anything heavy. No one (doctors or PTs) told me anything about limitations (actuality my spine doc told me I had no limitations but that was before I knew I had OP). I was wondering how you adjusted your life after your fracture healed.
First I was truly shocked that I had fractured a bone due to OP. I had it for several months before they found it because it didn’t show up on the original xrays. They had me go for PT where I was twisted and kneaded, and in so much pain, because I had a broken bone. Finally I went for another xray - a standing one- and they were like oh yea, you have a fracture!!! I was really told is no bending from the waist, no twisting, heavy lifting. It’s been a few years now and I don’t feel anything. I’ve been to a few doctors and none seem to really take an interest - they just prescribed drugs. That’s why I am really enjoying this site. I have learned so much. Joined a gym with a trainer, bought a weighted vest… which I have t used yet since it is so cold outside! But I’m excited about all the options out there to really work on getting healthy bones again. Do you do any weight training? It’s something you can do right at home. I bought a great book with exercises, some weights and some bands and try to do something every day. Are you in pain at all??
