Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

i've been taking Tymlos for one year and after seven months my bones are not healing from having broken lumbar bones. I go back in January a bone density test since I continued the Tymlos for a year to find out if it's working, my doctor probably will switch me to Forteo. every time i inject tymlos my heart pounds for about 20 minutes and the doctor said that's a side effect and not a problem, but it still scares me

@diane3551 what do you mean or expect with "healing" lumbar bones? I have three lumbar fractures and they never "heal." They do stabilize. But the structure of the spine is permanently altered which can result in life long pain unfortunately, at least for me, and I am also unable to lift much. I wonder if you had high expectations that no drug can actually meet!

I have low blood pressure (and an occasional ER visit with afib) so my heart beats fast after both Tymlos and Forteo but for me it was much worse on Froteo. Everyone is different. I had a blood pressure cuff and made sure my blood pressure wasn't too low before injecting. If it was, I hydrated and ate some salty things. Maybe that would help you! Personally I found a side effect that lasts minutes or even a few hours to be easier to handle than some meds with longer lasting effects.

Thank you for reaching out to me. I’ll be happy to check out these links, and hear from others.
That is also what I know about TYMLOS, that detail is attractive to me. I have not been treated for osteoporosis before. Every two years, I went to radiology for bone density tests, each test progressively worse, not reaching osteoporosis til this year. Then I was referred to, Center for Osteoporosis, UCONN Musculoskeletal Institute. Come to find out in my spine I have 1or 2 vertebrae @ 3.4. After a urine test I was told I make bone at a normal rate, but lose it faster than I make it. Due to an unrelated chest X-ray, 2 more vertebrae were detected one crumbling, another almost. That’s my history in a nutshell. Now I’m trying to learn as much as I can. Once I hear back from my PCP, I asked for her opinion of TYMLOS, and want her to be aware I’ll be on it. This next week, I’ll know if my insurance will help with prescription costs, then shortly thereafter, I’ll begin treatment.

Hi,

Were you advised to go to UCONN Musculoskeletal Institue? I am in Nashua, NH and not far from this Institute.
Thanks

I used Forte for 2 yrs and my bone density got better, went from ave of -3 to -2.3, started in 2020 to 2022. At first I got very stiff and leg pains, and also gained weight (25 lbs), likely from reduced activity due to my stiffness, and covid lockdowns at that time. The stiffness and pain was severe first 6 months making me want to stop the Forteo, however I either got used to it or it wasn't as bad after 6 months so I persevered and finished the 2 year treatment as I saw improvement in my bone density test after 6 months, Then my Dr recommended that I do a blood infusion of Taro-Zoledronic Acid, to keep from losing the bone density gained, as my Dr told me, based on my good results, I may not need to do anything more if I do the infusion, for 5 yrs, rather than the injections, although I should be monitored annually to ensure bone density doesn't get worse again. After the infusion I felt so much stronger and felt I could jump again, although 2 yrs later, now, I don't feel strong again. My bone density now is still -2.2 so it hasn't gotten worse, however, I do have lower back and leg pains that got worse over those 5 yrs, due to age and also severe osteoarthritis in my lower back and medium osteoarthritis in my upper back too (I am 68 yrs old), and because I gained weight. I had dieted and lost some of the weight a year ago, and felt better, but this last year, my weight has come back and makes me feel alot more sore and inactive. I am sure that my current problems are worse because of the weight gain not the osteosporosis. I generally can still be somewhat active and do mild hikes, and chores, considering all this,. although it is much harder than it was 5 years ago. I listened to my Drs advise, as obviously they know more than me, although I did research of the drugs for my knowledge, and I am happy about my osteosporosis treatment, although there really isn't a cure all. However I feel now that my weight gain is making things so much worse, as now I have hypertension and had to go on blood pressure pill. I am determined now to lose weight to make my pains and blood pressure better, using Bernstein Diet, thought about going on Ozempic to lose weght, but I don't want to introduce any more drugs into my system so will use my will power and do the diet.
