Prolia versus Tymlos for osteoporosis: Why choose one over the other?
My friend and I go to the same bone doctor . My friend was prescribed prolia and I was prescribed Tymlos to build bone .
What are the reasons to choose one over the other ?

Oh I wish something helps. They prescribed me Tramadol. I been taking every day 2x2. It takes edge off. I started to walk on treadmill 15-25 minutes a day. It’s better while walking. Pain after. I suddenly developed very strange headaches. It comes when I lay down. Not sure if this is from Tramadol or from back pain itself. Life is very sad right now. Trying curable app and thinking to find functional medicine doctor. Not sure what around the corner.
@sunny65 I hear you! Hope you find a thoughtful responsive functional medicine doc. I use topicals and patches with menthol, lidocaine or capcaisin. And hot baths!
I’ve been on Tymlos since November 4 th, started getting headaches about 4 weeks after, loss of appetite, some constipation ( which I use generic miralax twice a week) which has worked and nausea from the headaches! Is this common?
@arlene1958 you could try going down to 6 or 7 clicks on the adjustable pen, and over time move up. I was never able to take a full dose, staying at 7 clicks ultimately (6 clicks on a day I had something important to do) and still had a 20% gain in spine. For some reason I just could not tolerate the full dose even though it was only one click more than what I was doing,
Nausea with headaches sounds like migraine. Are you certain it comes from Tymlos? You could try skipping a day or two- my doctor always said that was okay. I did not have constipation from Tymlos.
I had the GI side effects but not the headaches. I also had extremity and joint pain.
I can’t adjust the pen. The kind I have is already pre-set for the 80 mcg. Also, I do have a pituitary tumor which is quite large, so my endocrinologist advised me to call my Neuro surgeon to get in for an MRI and see if anything has changed.
@windyshores , lidocaine helped a little bit in the past-5% patches by prescription. But for some reason not helping anymore. Tens unit helps more by distracting the mind. I bought one which operates via small remote control. I use 2-3 hours per day mostly in evening. I hate Tramadol. Not sure why it gives me headache and barely takes the edge off. I take 1 mg Clonazepam at night. I know that it is very bad mix, but doctor prescribed to me and I need to get some sleep. It would be nice be able to find something natural for sleeping at night . I hope that functional medicine can help somehow.I really don’t have where to go anymore. My endocrinologist categorically is against any steroid injections. I already did one and got no relief whatsoever.Nerve ablation didn’t work. There is some non opioid pain pill waiting for approval VX-5. Not approved yet. Another hope.Still not sure what to do after finishing Evenity and if Evenity contributes to so much pain. My friend is on Tymlos and has a lot of back pain as well. I know you liked this medication but everybody is different. I avoided all kind of pills almost all my life. And now I have to take so many different drugs. My body screams everyday -please stop.
I had extreme jaw pain and a bone scan that showed osteoradionecrosis. As this is a very rare side effect the other consideration was odontogenic inflammation, but 5 trips to dentist could not find a cause for that. The decision was to not repeat the Prolia. I do have to say that my sister and brother have both been on Prolia after their cancer treatments and have done extremely well with it. So I would definitely not rule it out for others.
Thank you for your reply
That is an excellent tip, and does make sense, as I have been craving salt! 8 years ago I was in very bad shape with so many consecutive spinal compression fractures. Hospitalized and sent home in a wheel chair. It was a challenging recovery, but I was also on narcotic pain meds, so do not recall headaches. Upset stomach for sure, but also likely due to the meds. Within 3 months of Forteo, I started healing and had no further fractures. I believe it is one of the 'cleaner' drugs and builds bone. I am concerned about going too much past the 24 month initial treatment though and hoped to only do 6 months, but now considering a year as getting a little nervous about some of the comments about Evenity. Do you have a follow up plan for after Forteo?
