Which one to choose: Evenity, Tymlos or Forteo?

Posted by ninglike @ninglike, Nov 3, 2024

I have serious osteoporosis for years and finally decide to start treatment after my L1 compression fracture.
My endocrinologist suggested:
1. Evenity
2. Tymlos or Forteo
I'm scared of their side effects and don't know which one to choose.
Appreciate your opinions as well as pros and cons

Hey Lady
I’m in the same place as you and I chose Evenity. I just received approval for my first dosage and I’m waiting on the facility to contact me for my first dosage. I’m not gonna lie, I’m scared of the potential side effects. So let’s keep in touch to compare notes.
I chose this because I did not want to give myself injections and have to worry about travel restrictions. Plus it’s only 12 months on Evenity. I thought I would throw that in there.

I started Tymlos today with just 2 clicks. FYI- Needle was painless in abdomen. I decided Tymlos 1st to buy me some time so perhaps I can do Evenity later. Plus I wanted to try a gradual med vs a 1 month dose all at once. We shall see how it goes……

I have been on Evenity and in severe pain since shot #6. Just got shot #10 so trying to hold out I n pain meds and muscle relaxers. Only 2 to go. My pain is on left side which is my week side and back. No one can give me Nswers. Hot tub helps with exercises but does not last. Good luck.

Sincerely thank you all for your sharing and advice.
I was going to start Forteo next month but just saw the following discussion:https://www.inspire.com/groups/bone-health-and-osteoporosis/discussion/forteo-side-effects-urgent/?lid=knr77xgdlylk&utm_campaign=Activity%20Summary%20Email_Daily%20Send&utm_source=email&inspire-id=J3VQXPM9
I'm scared and start wondering if I should start Forteo, your advice is very much appreciated!
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
Best regards

Check out this video, which I've posted before. This guy does a really good job of laying out a game plan for approaching meds. There's a chart in the video that, to me, is invaluable. You'll know it when you see it. It really helped me understand the different options and when you'd consider them. At the very least, it gives me something to discuss with my doctor.

Dear njx58,
Thank you for sharing the video and hope the gains outweigh the side effects.

Hello there. Welcome to the joinery of no sure answers as everyone is a bit different. I have no experience with Tymlos and was not offered that as an option. I wonder if that is more popular in the States? I am in Canada. My T-score was -3.5 and I had experienced 13 consecutive compression fractures in my spine when I went on Forteo. It literally saved my life. That was 8 years ago and I have not fractured since. Now I am need of another booster and had hoped to start Evenity, but still waiting for approval. I have researched and heard very good things about it on this site about Evenity. For some reason, Forteo was approved, and even though I already did the 24 months of it before, I have agreed to 6 months while I await approval for the Evenity. This time I went with generic brand of Forteo and find no difference to when I was on brand name. In fact, perhaps less initial side effect of mild headache and upset stomach. Forteo provided a travel case with refreezable ice pack to pick up from pharmacy for travel. Generic brand did not, but pharmacy just gives you a freezer pouch to get you home with. Hope that helps. : ). I am now 66 yrs old and very active with 6 grandchildren!

Hi broken13, would you please tell us what you did after your first 2 years on Forteo. I’m curious to know if you stopped all osteoporosis medication until you recently started back on Forteo waiting for Evenity approval. Also if you do get the Evenity approval what is the plan after your year of Evenity? Thanks

After the full 24 months of Forteo, I had one injection of Prolia but just before the second shot, I ended up with bone deterioration in my upper right jaw. So I did not continue with Prolia, and started Raloxifene, which had no side effects and "insignificant" decline over the 5 years to now accumulate to needing to once again boost the bone density. I am in my 5th month of Forteo. Still not yet approved for the Evenity, but will continue with Forteo for one year, and then if approved, will do 4 months of Evenity and then go back on Raloxifene .
