Is there any help at all for foot numbness in PN

Posted by wascaly @wascaly, Oct 27 9:27am

I’ve had PN several years. I’m not diabetic (amazingly), and I don’t have pain in my feet - just this horrible numbness, mainly in my left foot (sometimes both feet), leading to the fear of falling, AGAIN!

I’m wondering if anyone has found ANYTHING to help. I’ve spent buckets of money on creams, plus I’ve seen all kinds of expensive gadgets advertised on TV. I’m hesitant to buy any of them, since they look like versions of snake oil.

Has anyone had ANY relief from this horrific and DANGEROUS numbness?

I feel you’re right. It’s no wonder that I leave the doctor’s office just as confused as I was when I went in!
Living my best life and keeping my faith in God strong are the best things I can do now.
Thanks for putting it in perspective for me.

I’m clueless about an anti-inflammatory diet, but I’ve been lifting weights and doing cardio for 30+ years. This numbness has only gotten worse over the years and not one medical professional has any answer for relief.

Suffering from neuropathy with shin burning and toe pain. Weightlifting all my life. Recently introducing more intense (additional sets and heavier weights) leg exercises. Two weeks now. So far find burning and numbness subsiding YET despite efforts, when walking weakness remaining. Any similar results?

I wish I could say my workouts improve my numbness. At age 74, my strength has definitely diminished due in part to our location (a senior facility). This place has a room they call the Fitness Room and the best thing I can say about that is it has a couple of recumbent bikes. They actually had zero weights until we moved in and that was only because I figured with the money we spend to live here, the least they can do is provide the equipment for seniors to stay healthy!
Because of the neuropathy, I find it extremely difficult to do anything for my legs. When I did do squats even with the light dumbbells they have, my legs hurt for days. The only way I get any leg workout at all is on the bike.
Bottom Line: getting old is harder than having a baby!

Stationary Biking helps. I try and do enough to raise my heart rate although metoprolol Tartrate limits top side. usually no higher than 95. I’m 83 next month. I’ll keep up my leg weights exercises. And post results.

You can google Anti inflammatary diet and mediteranean diet. The short of it is no sugar or processed foods, mainly fatty fish like Salmon and mostly fresh veggies, fruits, legumes, Whole grains, healthy fats like avocado and olive Oil, nuts, seeds, berries, plenty to eat and this diet is also good for heart health, weight management, Cancer prevention, and mental health. I for one am happy to try it as there is nothing to lose and only good health to gain.

Love this. I went to the exact diet for the last 4 months. Lost 30 pounds, although the numbness in the hands at night is worst but still exists.

I do the recumbent bike for cardio but when I finish (after 30 min), my legs are like rubber.
I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what you mean by “metoprolol tartrate limits top side,” but at almost 83 years old, you rock!

I'm 58. I am a diabetic since 2017 (A1C 8.7 - 10.7)and peripheral neuropathy started with my feet (tingling, numb, painful nerve discomfort, etc..). Until this day(2024), I have been dealing with incurable, unmanageable, uncontrollable diabetes II and painful body peripheral neuropathy from feet, legs, waist and hands starting to become more and more numb. (especially feet) And fell 5 times as legs with dead as no longered functioned. This was the most terrifing and scary feeling as I thought became suddenly paralyzed. No feeling whatsoever! I quickly called my neighbor and was sat down on couch for hours until I started some feelings...

After all the doctors, neurologist, emergency rooms, hospitals, etc.. , plus prescribed medications (PR gabapentin/gabapentin, Juniva, Metformin, Duloxetine, etc.. I have purchased massagers, creams, and stuff on Amazon with help with PN at no avail....Sorry to say, I completely regret to spend thousands and thousands of dollars (Out of Pocket and/or Insurance) for PN not to mentioned PN. Not to mention, disability claims have been denied twice and must endure the pain at work without telling anyone...

After 8 years with such painful conditions, you DO NOT want the neuropathy (PN-nerve damage) to grow, spread and affect your entire feet, calves, thighs, waist and hands as it is an extremely terrible feeling along with an uneasy painful and frustrating state of mind, major anxiety, stress, nervousness with daily activities, etc.. And not to mention, impotent for the last 7 years and specialized doctor(s) want 20K to make you believe that they can help with it. I declined!

Sadly, advise for these serious mental and health complications and conditions were experienced as "NO CURE" ! The final solution mentioned by Neurologist was to amputate feet, and legs, and maybe hands. I could not live with myself with such a decision. I will continue to endure and suffer which I have accepted to convince mind this nasty discomfort is strictly a part of my remaining style way of my life.

As I feel discomfort and pain, I purchased a 3 year dog (German Shepherd) to help encourage, smile, and walk at least 4 times a week which helps body, muscles, and seldomly nerves. He is amazing! I seriously regret not adopting a dog many years ago...

Sadly, I found NO devices, creams, massagers, meds, specialist, doctors, etc. to ultimately eliminate nor majorly reduce the discomfort and sleepless nights of Peripheral Neuropathy not to mention diabetes II(except for short/long term insulin to lower blood sugars on a daily basis). Again, I molded and learned to ignore both awful symptoms as it has been a part of my life for years. An extremely sad way to live into your golden years.....

My advice is to eat healthy, "exercise', possibly adopt a pet for serious encouragement, and most definitely "Save your Money"…! As far as diabetes, I take insulin each day and eat healthy to help maintain blood sugars and when very low or high, PN brings out more of the dreadful and nasty pain in feet, legs and waist plus hands. And ultimately alters and brings extremely sad moments in my mind in which I try to fall asleep with sleepy pills and when at work must excuse myself some way to regain some control and continue to ignore the pain.........

My prayers are with all of you …
