Ksdm: There is a prescription called Carafate, or generic is Sucralfate that coats the lining of the stomach. Pain pills tear my stomach up something fierce so I never take them more then 3-5 days. I only take half the Carafate because they will constipate after only a few days, but they coat the stomach to prevent all that upset within. ONE other issue, is these pills have to be taken one hour before you swallow anything else or 2 hours afterwards. Otherwise they attach to whatever else you swallowed and will do you no good whatsoever. If you have a canine friend they are even recommended by veterinarians, but same rules apply -- 1 hour before or 2 hours afterwards.

shiver,
I also take Carafate - only when having a major GERD attack as I am right now.
It really helps, but I can only stay on it for a week due to the constipation.
The dosing schedule is a hassle as you said.
But…it really works.
