Does anyone have pain in their hip and back ?

I am having a horrible time with my right hip and my lower back ! I have found that not trying to walk has helped me. But I realize that I cannot keep going this way ! I am so tired of walking (and looking ) Like Quasimodo !I have been told by my neurosurgeons PA That I have a small bulging disc , my physical therapist has told me that he can't help me and every time I saw him for the last 3 -4 weeks ,he was having to put my S1 back in place . I even called my pain management team and was told that he had no openings until my scheduled appointment in January ... They told me that and I just burst out crying on the phone ! I was getting pretty desperate Next time I get this bad ,I will go to the Er. Of all of the medical people I have seen so far ,not one of them has even said a word about my pain levels at all !
On the 6th of December I have another appointment with my Orthopedic Dr.

@prayersforall Hi! I used to use Salon Pas until my doctor prescribed me with the 5% lidocaine patches. They really work much better!!!

Hi sherrym25. Thank you for your kind comment. There is only 1%
difference than the other 4% patch. I'm still waiting for it to 'kick in'.
(It's been a while. Maybe by Christmas). I guess I wasn't one of the
lucky ones, but I'm delighted sherrym that you are. Be well.

@prayersforall A smile a day means 1 less frown ( I’ll take them anytime . The roll on is easier than patches now if they would make a spray

Thank you for your 'smiling' comment. Regarding patch/roll on/spray ...
There are companies who do make a 'spray'. Some though are very
'cold' especially as we face winter. I found an 'oil base' in a spray form
very soothing. It can be sprayed on some tissues and applied to pained
area. Afterwards, there is a bit of relief. And like 'Monk' says ... "You'll
thank me later". Let's keep the 'smiles' and prayers coming. OK? OK.

@prayersforall Yes, when I first received the prescription patches, I compared the ingredients between them and Salon Pas and was skeptical that 1% would make any difference, but it really did! It’s a very discernible difference for me. I let my dad use one on his knee and he couldn’t stop talking about how much it helped compared to Salon Pas. Also, the prescription patches stay on my skin much better and seem to help with the pain longer.

My neurosurgeon's PA knows nothing about anything and is just there to save the surgeon time by screening for possible surgeries or doing follow-ups. It may be your SI joint and that can often be easily be remedied. Go to a pain clinic for a cortisone shot. They will do it quickly-it is their business. Make sure it done by a true MD, not a PA or NP. Some family medical doctors can do this also. Just ask. It works wonders, and SI joint pain will make everything on the one side hurt sometimes all the way down your leg as well as your back and back of hip and even across to the other side if it is bad enough. Poke and push inward with your finger. If the center back of a hip hurts horribly then it is SI joint. If only the outside of your hip hurts when poked it is probably bursitis which also radiates pain. If the lower part of your spine has severe pain when poked it is the disc or pulled muscle (both which usually get better with back exercises and few surgeons recommend doing surgery because the outcome isn't a sure thing and can revert with time). Back exercises are simple - lay flat on your back with your knees bent feet flat, push your pelvis down against the bed or floor. You can do this at work by putting your back against a wall with knees slightly bent and pushing your back against the wall. Do this multiple times a day for 2 weeks. Take a Tylenol every 8 hours for a few days if necessary for pain. I have another trick - Go to a curb, doorway, or stair, hold onto something and bend your knees slightly with your heels off the edge and tuck your rear under and stretch your heel downward - alternate and then both- then walk off straight. I have often had my lower back pop and the relief is amazing. When you lay down have a pillow under your knees or if on your side between your knees so prevent pulling on your back muscles. I have lived with herniated discs in my lower back for 54 years and arthritis in my SI joint for 10. I also had to have a hip replaced recently and that is a deeper in the hip joint type of pain, just for reference. Avoid anyone who wants to twist your spine. My husband also likes to do knee pulls to the chest while on his back but that helps him but not me. They should have taken x-rays and an MRI to look for all possibilities and you can ask for a radiologist report. Hope this info helps. This kind of pain can be horrible.

I have had chronic back pain for many years due to a high school football injury. After 50 years I am relatively pain free due to a variety of procedures. An L5-S1 fusion to stabilize helped, but then SI pain started. Physical therapy helped, but was always only temporary. I finally had my SI joint ablated and also underwent basivertebral nerve ablation a month or two later. Finally I am relatively pain free. However daily exercises for core and SI joint stability as well as stretching hip flexors definitely are a must for me. I also found riding a bicycle helped tremendously with hip pain. Walking also helps. The more I sit the more it hurts.

I want to add that I play a lot of golf and some doctors have said that golf contributed to my back issues and for several years I could only play sparingly. I now play everyday, year round, weather permitting…keep moving!!

Wow- what a great story and reasonable proof that while solutions exist, we have to be active to help ourselves. I too had a major football injury(tore ileopsosis muscle off of lesser trochanter) and had it reattached surgically (1962!!!) it still bothers me. Now that I have Arachnoiditis, and a complex back pain situation, it is „just one more thing.“ Building strength, stretching and activity in general are all beneficial. I also find bike-riding is a huge help. Thanks for sharing your experience. Archie

You have to wonder if this is referred pain and actually not from your spine because your symptoms don't seem to match your MRI imaging. There are various pelvic pathologies that could be responsible such as sacroiliitis and more.
