First Month on Forteo Update

Posted by kar50 @kar50, Dec 5 11:04am

I'm just finishing my first month on Forteo. I've been pleasantly surprised at my lack of negative reactions, as I was really hesitant to start. I had minor headaches and body aches for the first two days. I inject before bed. I do have bruising around some of the injection sites, and I rotate around abdomen and thigh areas (4 in the rotation). I will ask my doctor or the endocrinologist pharmacist about that. Yesterday I completed my one month blood lab. My calcium serum is lower than usual @8.9, and the albumen is about the same @4.1. I'm awaiting my doctor's interpretation of those levels.

kar50, thanks for the update, so glad it's working out well for you. Are your D levels good? Your doctor may have you increase calcium or D, he'll say. Are you using bone markers.
My sister told me to pinch the skin at the injection site, but let it go before the needle enters. It does seem to reduce bruising but I look for those tiny surfacespider veins and avoid them. No more pink polka dots for me.

This time D levels weren't tested, they have been good in the past. I'll ask about increasing calcium. Yes, bone markers were established prior to starting, but no follow up on those just yet.
I will try the release of pinched skin prior to needle entry. Also, I think the 10 seconds until pulling needle out may be too long, The Forteo video suggests 10 seconds, but the paperwork says 5.
Thanks for your suggestions!

I pinched up, inserted needle and let go as I injected so that nothing leaks out. Most likely others do things differently. My kid has type 1 diabetes so I started doing shots 30 years ago!

I read that Tymlos "eats D3". It might be true of Forteo too, I don't know. I upped my D to 3,000 units and levels stayed stable. So it was true! After I was done with Tymlos, my levels starting going up so to avoid toxicity I went down to 2,000 units or even alternating with 1,000- until my next test.

I did Forteo for the full 24 months 8 years ago. I did the full rotation for injections as well. I'm on another course of the Forteo now, but using the generic brand. I did not want to inject in the belly and the pharmacist said it would be fine to just do the 4 rotation in the thighs. Also for the injection I do a large pinch of the "fattest" part, swab and insert pin, count to 10 and gently remove. You don't have to stab it in, gentle insert works just fine and I only have bruise if I neglect to do a straight injection. A slight angle stings and then I get a bruise lol. It is a great medication and for me, was very effective. I wish you well!

I've finished 24 months of Forteo about 2 yrs ago. I had similar experiences as you have had. Other than the task of injecting everyday (and remembering to count to 10), it was pretty well a non-event.
Last summer, I participated in a Forteo study about how I injected. They had me put on around my waist a material that was similar to body mass and skin and to show how I injected a couple of different pens. I have no idea who paid for the study and what they were studying. They did pay me $175 for my time :).
