Discovered esophageal cancer: Should I get an appt at Mayo Clinic?

Posted by shermt54 @shermt54, Dec 5 10:47am

Hello.... After doing a volunteer study for pancreatic cancer with ultrasound that they did with an upper scope, I was found to have a nodule in my esophagus where it connects to the stomach. that was done in july. they found high dyplasia cells but the sample was small....so oct 24 i had another scope done where they went in and removed the the nodule ...Three weeks later the biopsy came in and say it was cancer, but the doctor had left a note in chart that good news they think they got it all....the biopsy said it was cancerous , so now i have another appointment Jan 24, 2025 that they are going to go in and remove do another ablation because the cancer cells were close to the edge i guess...
The thing i worry about is the time from one procedure to another...I am not sure if its because the doctor is so busy or what ....is that a normal time frame from oct to jan for something like this....i wouldn't want it to spread....
So now i am wondering should i try getting into mayo or would i just be pushing the can down the road

any insight to your thoughts would be welcome .....Thanks

@shermt54, what a surprise to discover a cancerous nodule during a volunteer trial. But on the other hand, thank goodness it was found early and removed.

Should you wish to get a second opinion at Mayo Clinic, you can submit a request here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

How are you doing?

Yes, you should get to Mayo!

They're the best, have been for me.

Why not?

As I always tell others who ask, you likely - may - get only one chance to fight cancer, so have that war with the best.

You need and deserve that, as do all the family and friends who love and need you.

Get to Mayo as quickly As you can!!

Good luck. Let us know what you do - when you get your appointment.

You will be very happy you trusted your life with the skilled and caring professionals at Mayo.

I was initially diagnosed with esophageal cancer at my home hospital and they indicated it was stage 1. We decided to get a second opinion at Mayo where it was diagnosed Stage 3, locally advanced. That led to a recovery plan of chemotherapy, radiation, an esophagectomy and now immunotherapy. I expect this to be my best plan for a cure. Yes, getting a second opinion at Mayo is smart and appropriate. I'm not sure how much faster your treatment plan would be at Mayo, but they are one of the best in experience and volume dealing with various cancers.

I am at Mayo right now in the middle of my treatment plan for esophageal cancer. One round of chemo left, 7 rounds of radiation left and then surgery in 2025. This is my 2nd cancer with both being treated at Mayo Clinic. I highly recommend getting treated there. It does take some time to get in, but well worth the wait.

Definitely seek a second opinion at Mayo, MSK, or MD Anderson ASAP.

I would go to Mayo. I always go to Mayo if I don't feel like my doctors are doing things right for me. I have barrett's esophagus and so so many gastro diseases. So do your self a favor and go to Mayo if you can! I trust them. Good luck to you.

hi Shermt-I have the exact same diagnosis but have not gone for a second opinion. I had a small nodule removed with clear margin and the doctor said he wants me back in three months to check. if you would please update after your second opinion as I'll be curious to see what they say.

My husband was diagnosed with EC Set 2023, changed to Mayo in Jax on February 1st. What a game changer, we are so happy and have complete confidence and trust on our team care. First, they don’t treat you as a statistic, is personalized care. We’re a travel patient, even scheduling works with you for treatment, testing and consultation. So you spend the least time there…I cannot say more
Good luck!!
