I’m just guessing you may have had stainless steel implants 11 years ago which has shown that vertebrae above the fusion point develop problems. I too have similar symptoms and my surgery was in 1990 but I have no plans to re-operate on my spine unless necessary. I’m also a retired RN and I understand your concerns. Unless the doc can provide you a compelling reason for replacing implant #1 I agree don’t do it. Knowing what my recovery was like way back then I’m not eager to relive that experience. Here is something for you to consider. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4068848/

Thanks for responding. The surgery I had 11 years ago was also awful like you describe. Hard to forget. I tell everyone I have PTSD from the whole experience.
Unfortunately, this surgery is necessary at this point. I don't care about my chronic pain, having had it almost 20years, but the leg numbness after standing a few minutes is a concern since it caused me to fall already. I just hope it gets resolved and doesn't get worse after the surgery. I am in the process of getting a second opinion. These two doctors were recommended by primary care and said he would let them do surgery on him or his family, so at least I have that small piece of mind. Thanks for the article as well.
