Anyone been given Tadalafil after prostate cancer surgery?
RP surgery 2 weeks ago. Age 67. Today I picked up an Rz for Tadalafil, which apparently is primarily for ED or enlarged prostate. Obviously, those don't apply at the moment. I did find a 2011 report online that said it could be used to inhibit residual metastatic PC cell growth. Anyone been given this after surgery? Any thoughts on its usefulness or side effects? Thanks again. This group has been a source of information and strength.

I had a prostatectomy 2 months ago.
My physio recommended 5mg of Cialis per day - to encourage blood flow, with a view to reducing the likelihood of scar tissue forming, to avoid urinary trouble.
I took those, then read online that I'd need them for 3 months.
So in my post-surgery meeting with the surgeon, I asked how long I'd need them.
"Oh, I don't believe in those".
Uh... ok.
Seeing my GP on Friday anyway, so I'll get a 3rd opinion.
2 weeks... you must be due to get rid of that damn catheter.
Lucky you. Now comes the fun part...
RP 10 months ago and given prescription for Tadalafil 10mg to increase blood flow so I'm also very interested in any science toward reducing cancer return or other reasons Oncologist would prescribe. I'll certainly ask that question next visit.
Catheter was removed Friday. I'm not tethered to that bag any more but I am stuck close to a bathroom. Not exactly fun but a step up from the hospital and the catheter, so I'm happy for small steps. Appreciate your response.
I was prescribed Tadilafil 5mg daily by my urologist after RP 3 years ago. Depending on the surgery required and presence of any ED pre surgery, the Tadalifil (Cialis)increases blood flow to the penis to help keep the erectile tissue healthy and viable. Some men have full erections almost immediately after catheter removal and don't need Cialis. Some have permanent ED. Most are in between and it may take time to regain spontaneous erections. Cialis 5mg is also prescribed for men without prostate cancer as an aid to help with erectile dysfunction.
Some urologists also recommend use of a vacuum pump beginning after catheter removal (if no nocturnal or spontaneous erections) to help keep the erectile tissue stretched and increase blood flow.
@retireddoc's comment above explains why I'm taking tadalafil after NS RARP. I'm not a medical professional, but here's a document on UCSF that someone on this blog mentioned in another thread. It has a section on Penile Rehabilitation that includes some information related to your question:

Other than a headache the first couple days after I started taking it, I haven't had any side effects. It does seem to help with increased blood flow to the penis. BTW, I get quite a discount using free Goodrx.com coupons. I haven't tried it yet, but someone on this blog said Mark Cuban's Cost Plus drugs was very inexpensive to buy it, but you have to open an account first before having your prescription sent there. Best wishes.
Never heard of cialis or viagra (PDE5 inhibitors) killing prostate cancer cells, so I did a quick search. There are at least two studies which show that these types of drugs, while not directly acting to kill prostate cancer cells, do enhance the effect of other chemotherapeutic agents on prostate cancer: vincristine and doxorubicin.
There are good studies which show a positive effect of PDE5s on the timing and quality of the return of erectile function in men who had nerve-sparing prostate surgery. Your PT sounds knowledgeable about penile rehab.
I get 90 5mg generic tadalafil for around $60 at my pharmacy. On Medicare.
@retireddoc -- that's an excellent price. I use Goodrx coupons and 30 5mg generic tadalafil are about $20, so the same price. I haven't tried getting tadalafil on my medicare plan for a couple years (so it's old information), but back then they wanted $277 for 10 tablets. Although I haven't used it, I do know that Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs is selling 90 5 mg generic tadalafil for about $11 plus shipping & handling (another $10).
Wow! I'm going to have to look into that.
Costco sells 90 5mg for $23. I don’t use my Medicare plan as the co pay is $30.
