Does anyone have a solution to help manage Reclast side effects?

Posted by dingus @dingus, Aug 15, 2024

Does anyone have a solution to combat Reclast side effects. I had the infusion a year and a half ago and the side effects started shortly after I had the infusion. I still have weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in bones, dizziness (serious dizziness), cold sweats, tired all the time and nervous twitching in bones. Any suggestions?

@hlp123 so sorry this happened to you. And you only took Prolia for one year, followed by the suggested Reclast,

I hope you have a good endocrinologist. Not sure what if any studies show about this sequence. Chances are the doc will try Forteo, Tymlos or Evenity.

Someone posted good results for Evenity after Prolia, though effectiveness was reduced. The same might be true for Evenity after Reclast but again, someone on this forum posted good results for that too.

"Great Bones" says that Forteo and Tymlos aren't effective right after Prolia (due to rebound) but we would be interested to hear if they are possible in your situation. I know Tymlos is reputed to help with healing since I took it right after spinal fractures.

I am so glad that you got the head of Endo involved. Since you have fractures after (because of?) treatment, perhaps the doctors will take extra care in their recommendation. Let us know!

I just typed a long response to your message and then I tried to print it out and I can't find it. I don't know what happened to the message. Please let me know if you got my response ! Thank you
My Dexa scan results from August 27, 2024 were included in my response. Lumbar spine L-1-L-4 level -1.7 Lumbar spine at L2-L-4 level -2.2 femoral neck -3.1 total hip -3.2 I hope my whole message is saved somewhere
Thank you, I hope we can continue to share information.

Thank you so much for your response ! Yes, the endocrinologist that I sought for a second opinion said that even though I was diagnosed with fractured ribs in August, that I had to wait until December and then get the blood work that he wanted to give my ribs a chance to heal before he would decide what medication I should take to protect my bones. My bone density score from from August 27th are : Lumbar spine L-1-L-4 level at -1.7, at L-2-L-4 level at -2.2, at femoral neck -3.1, hip at -3.2 I really appreciate the helpful advice from you. After my year on Reclast, the doctor said the dexa scan showed that the Reclast had locked in the gains from the Prolia and that I would me ok. This is not the case.
Thank you !

@hlp123 It is difficult for me to follow the sequence of events of your fractures, scans and dr statements. It sounds like you fractured 5 ribs, had a DXA scan and a doctor told you had locked in your gains from the Prolia all in the month of August. Plus you previously said you had lost 20% compared to your DXA from before the Prolia.
Maybe I've got this mixed up because it doesn't seem to make sense.
It certainly seems like 2 Prolia shots and then 1 Reclast infusion really went haywire for you? With only two Prolia shots usually Reclast would do the job. But as I said before if you don't track the bone markers you are just assuming the Reclast will work and it simply does not always work for stopping that post Prolia bone loss.
If you had 5 ribs fracture without a traumatic accident and your DXA spinal numbers aren't that bad - then you may have some other issues going on besides low bone density. Of course low BMD can allow a traumatic injury to cause greater damage and more fracturing. So with the ribs it's important to evaluate the degree of injury and the cause of the injury. Did you sneeze or were you in a car wreck at 70mph? If it was minor trauma and impact then you are very likely at high risk of more fractures.

BTW, Prolia is not too bad for side effects if you totally ignore the gigantic post Prolia problem which some people do.

I don't see any messages to me, sorry! I lose messages from time to time when I switch back to the forum in the middle of writing one!

This confuses me:

Lumbar spine L-1-L-4 level -1.7 Lumbar spine at L2-L-4 level -2.2

@windyshores Thamks so much for all the information you provided - and to everyone here. Certainly gives me comfort having a support group like this. I should have results by Monday and doctor follow-up soon after. Now I feel more knowledgeable and will be ready with some questions.
I truly do feel my doctor has been a partner in my journey. When my torn rotator cuff surgery was stopped because my bones “were like butter,” this doctor (endocrinologist) prescribed Tymlos (for 2 years) as well as discussed diet and supplements. After the 2 yrs, I had a successful Rotator cuff surgery and that’s when we moved over to Reclast. Started with 1/2 dose year 1; next year had full dose; due to have dose 3 in 2025. But, as mentioned, broken wrist with a black ice fall, and Dr suggested getting a “booster” 6 mos early. I thought a booster would be half dose, busy they gave me full. That was in August and here we are.
Stay tuned for test results and Thanks to all for listening.

Met with the Rheumatologist this week. After reviewing my history, bloodwork and ESR and CRP abnormal markers, she diagnosed me with Polymyalgia rheumatica. I am starting Prednisone 5 mg/2 in morning and 1 at night) for 3 mos. Follow/up in 3 wks.
She said that there are no tests that point to what may have caused this. I did share with her some of the stories on this site and some case studies connecting to Reclast. She said it could be a rare side effect, but can’t say
Hoping the Prednisone brings relief.

Paula, Please let us know how the Prednisone works after you've taken it for awhile. I don't have Polymyalgia Rheumatica, but I am looking for something to conteract the Reclast side effects. Maybe Prednisone could help.

Unfortunately steroids contribute to bone loss if taken at a certain level for a certain amount of time. Many doctors are leery of prescribing for anyone with osteoporosis unless there is a very clear need. Let us know if your doctor does prescribe!

I agree! My endocrinologist claims my issues are from taking prednisone for years to deal with my Ankolosing spondylitis; again, any medication consumed has it side effects and only WE can truly access if the side effects out weigh our current issues, my thought!

Quick update. Within 48 hours of starting the low dose of a prednisone, I felt like myself again. I cried when I was able to raise my arms over my head and touch my toes. I truly was concerned I was going to need a cane or walker at 65. Both Rheumatoid and Endocrinologist mentioned how long term steroid can impact bone loss; this is why the low dose for 3 mos and then will start to wean off to see if the treatment kicked started my body back to normal”normal.” I just cannot believe how quickly it gave relief and so far minimal side effects. Has not interfered with sleep, actually appetite seems suppressed. Hubby says I’m a bit more “wired” during the day. I have a follow-up with Rheumatologist in 3 wks and will report back.
Can’t thank you all enough for listening and letting me share this experience.
Endocrinologist still feels no connection to Reclast since I had infusion twice with Zero side effects. She just scheduled a Bone Density test for March 2025 IDK just want to keep looking forward and keep healthy.

Windyshores, Trying to get this out to you and I just lost a couple of paragraphs. Trying again. I want to say first of all that I hadn't read anything regarding Reclast side effects when I started experiencing these pains etc. I had the infusion in February of 2023. The day after, I woke up with major pain in my shoulders. I've never had shoulder pain. It got better over the next couple of weeks. Then I started having excruciating pain in my right foot when I went from a sitting to a standing position. I called my PCP and told her I needed an x-ray because I thought my foot was broken. The x-ray showed nothing. Since then, the shoulder pain has subsided but the foot pain has come back about three times. It lasts about a week each time. Other side effects that I've had since the Reclast infusion are weak legs, swelling in feet, pain in legs, and toes (toe pain so bad I sometimes cannot sleep) numbness in my right leg, dizziness (serious dizziness) cold sweats, unable to regulate my body temperature, headaches. These all come and go. Thank goodness they don't all come at the same time. I've talked to several doctors of different persuasions, but no one can give me a good answer as to why I'm having these side effects (Of course, I'm convinced it's the Reclast due to the sequence of events), or, more importantly, how to fix the problems. It stays in your body for five years. Is this what I have to look forward to for the next three and a half years?? WindyShores or anyone, let me know if you have any questions.

I am glad (not for your pain) to see I am not crazy as my leg pain also comes and goes-maybe a week at a time then, like a switch, almost feels normal again. Sometimes for a reason such as an activity or overuse but sometimes no reason at all. It, too, keeps me awake and feels like a deep pain/aching. I have had this when I took Fosamax in 2008 so stopped it but took a chance on Reclast. I had one dose and will not take another when due late January. I will see how long it lasts.
