Concussion caused by coughing?

Posted by hopenr @hopenr, Aug 31 9:41am

Hi. I had a TBI (car accident) 6 years ago. Since then I have had two concussion recurrences after coughing. Most recently, three days ago, I swallowed something wrong and coughed it up. It set off a very violent coughing spasm which brought on a migraine level headache and I have had concussion symptoms since. I am wondering if anybody has experience with this? Thank you!

@hopenr This is an issue to discuss with your doctor. Post concussion syndrome sometimes presents with the headaches you are describing, but it would be rare to occur this long after the incident. It could be that your coughing is precipitating a migraine. Post-migraine symptoms can feel a lot like a concussion.
Have you let your PCP know what is happening? They may want you to have a neurology consult to rule out anything more serious.

Hi, @hopenr - I'm sorry to hear about the migraine-level headache and other symptoms you experienced after a violent coughing spasm. I've experienced a concussion and coughing spasms, and both are unpleasant.

A few members who have experienced coughing symptoms and may have some input related to headaches or other symptoms arising after a coughing spasm are @squirt0104 @dc1950 @kellybear @smokinwaters @joanland @stephanieg1.

hopenr - did your primary care provider or another doctor you've seen have any thoughts on why you might have had headaches and other symptoms after a coughing spasm? What other symptoms were you experiencing in addition to the headache?

Sorry to hear you are having that issue after coughing. The coughing is bad enough. I can't give you any support in that area as I do not have headaches after coughing. I hope you can find some answers quickly. Donna
