Has anyone had a brown colon on a colonoscopy?

Posted by bluesmom @bluesmom, Nov 22, 2024

The images of my colon from my last colonoscopy show that the inside is clearly brown and not pink (pink is normal). The doctor asked if I drink smooth moves tea or take laxatives (I don’t) but otherwise couldn’t explain it. Has anyone else had this result? I’ve had IBS for 25 years and eat a gf/df and low sugar diet due to hashimoto’s and likely Sjogren’s disease. Thank you.

Did the doctor say the colon was fully clear for the procedure? Could it have been residue and not your actual colon tissue?

Thanks for the reply. Yes my colon was clear and the colon itself was brown. I just can’t imagine there’s not some explanation. I’m wondering if it could be dysbiosis. I’d love to know if anyone else has had this.
Thanks again.

It sounds like melanosis coli. I had it once on a colonoscopy years ago, don’t know why, never before or since. Read up to a little about it to put your mind at ease, it’s why your Dr. asked if you had been using laxatives. I hadn’t either. If everything else was fine, you’re likely having one of those times our bodies do strange things for no good reason to keep us on our toes. Good luck, Happy Thanksgiving!

If you take certain drugs for constipation it can turn your colon an abnormal color. Example, before I started on the drug Linzess for IBS-C(constipation) I took can herbal OTC med which had different herbs for constipation . One in particular was Cascara sagrada. This is known to change the color of the colon. It can be seen in the elderly population also. I’m sure there are other reasons also.

bb03, Couldn't your doctor explain why your colon was brown?? If not, I'd wouldn't go back to him for another colonoscopy!

What do you think of Linzess? I didn’t have much luck, but have considered revisiting it.
